1
Rocks
  • 8.3.4 Explain how igneous, metamorphic, and
sedimentary rocks are interrelated in the
  • rock cycle.

Students do not need to know the examples of each
type of rock shown in this powerpoint. They are
for information only.
2
Each type of rock is formed differently and can
change fromone type to another over time.
3
Types of Rocks
4
Sedimentary RocksHow They are Made
  • Forms from the compaction and/or cementation of
rock pieces, mineral grains, or shell fragments
    called sediments.
  • Sediments are formed through the processes of
weathering and erosion of rocks exposed at
    Earths surface.
  • Sedimentary rocks can also form from the chemical
depositing of materials that were once dissolved
    in water.

5
Types of Sedimentary Rocks
6
Igneous RocksWhat are They?
  • Forms when molten rock (magma) cools and
    hardens.
  • If cooling takes place slowly beneath Earths
surface, the igneous rock is called intrusive.
  • If the cooling takes place rapidly on Earths
surface, the igneous rock is called extrusive.

7
Types of Igneous Rocks
8
Metamorphic RocksWhat are They?
  • Forms when rocks are changed into different kinds
of rocks by great heat and/or pressure.
  • They are heated, squeezed, folded, or chemically
changed by contact with hot fluids.

9
Types of Metamorphic Rocks
10
Rock Cycle
  • The rock cycle is an ongoing process.
  • It is a series of natural processes that can
change rocks from one kind to another.
  • Check out the diagram on the next slide!
