Robot Assignment

2
Materials used
  • The materials that were being used were
  • (1) RC tank controller
  • (1) 9.6 V NiCd battery
  • (1) 10 LED s (5 green/ 5 red)
  • (50cm100cm) black cardboard
  • Misc (Electric tape, Glue, Extra wire, assorted
    Lego gears)

3
Wireless Control Unit
  • The control will allow the user to control the
  • robot and demand it to move using certain
  • joysticks on the wireless controller. The
  • following is a list of hardware required to
  • complete the goal for this project
  • 1 wireless remote control tank controller must
have controls for both tracks, as well as the
turret (this will enable me to use the turret
motor to power a simple gripper/shovel)
  • LEDs (quantity to be determined, lt12)
  • Resistors (quantity to be determined)
  • Wires (quantity to be determined)
  • Thick cardboard
  • Glue
  • Breadboard
  • Other miscellaneous materials needed will be
    determined as the project progresses

Identify Problem
  • The main goal of this project is to reprogram,
construct and instruct a robot to carry out
various commands that the user directs to it. The
robot is a remodel of an original bought from the
store, there will be at least five modifications
to it. It will be controlled solely by a wireless
remote control. The robot, when completed, must
pass the obstacle course test. It must makes its
way through a track, while avoiding various
obstacles. The robot must be strong enough to
withstand minor collisions with walls, other
robots, as well as being flipped overhand falling
short distances (20cm max). The only obvious
constraint to this project is that the width of
the robot must not exceed the width of the track.

5
Research Problem
  • The size and nature of the obstacles to be
encountered on the track, as well, the width of
the course and its most narrow points must be
researched and accounted for before buying and
modifying the robot. Other materials needed would
include soldering iron, screwdriver(s), glue gun,
scissors, and utility knife. The robot will be
controlled using a remote control not by a
program. The following is a list of hardware
required to complete the goal for this project
  • 1 wireless remote control tank controller must
have controls for both tracks, as well as the
turret (this will enable me to use the turret
motor to power a simple gripper/shovel)
  • LEDs (quantity to be determined, lt12)
  • Resistors (quantity to be determined)
  • wires (quantity to be determined)
  • Thick cardboard
  • Glue
  • Breadboard
  • Other miscellaneous materials needed will be
    determined as the project progresses

6
Possible Solutions
  • The stock RC tank will be taken apart, leaving
just the tracks, motors, electronics in place.
The turret will be disassembled to allow the use
    of the turret motor.
  • The turret motor will be used to power a device
that can manipulate the environment in some way.
This can be any of the following (gripper, fan,
    shovel, hammer, etc).
  • LEDs will be attached to each motor to indicate
    that it is running
  • The stock antenna will be modified/replaced to
    allow a longer range.
  • The electronic components will covered by a
cardboard shell, with openings for the LEDs. The
shell will be constructed in such a way that it
can be easily detached to facilitate the
    maintenance of the electronic parts.
  • An external roll cage will be constructed out of
stiff wire to prevent the robot from being rolled
    on its back.
  • The stock controller may need to be modified to
improve the responsiveness of the controls.

7
Best Possible Solution(s)
  • The robot for this project will be based on an
RC tank. The tank will be stripped of parts,
except for the electronic components and the
tracks. A robotic shovel will be attached to the
robot this will be powered by the motor from the
turret. The antenna wire will be replaced, to
allow for a better range. LED lights will be
attached to allow for better visibility of the
robot. A cardboard shell will be built around the
    electronic parts of the robot.
