Title: Cloud Computing

1
Cloud Computing
  • B. Ramamurthy

2
Introduction
  • Cloud computing is a computing paradigm shift
where computing is moved away from personal
computers or an individual application server to
a cloud of computers. Users of the cloud only
need to be concerned with the computing service
being asked for, as the underlying details of how
it is achieved are hidden. This method of
distributed computing is done through pooling all
computer resources together and being managed by
    software rather than a human.

3
Cloud Computing
  • Cloud computing is a novel platform for computing
    and storage.
  • Cloud computing provisions and configures servers
    as needed.
  • It allows for more efficient use of the
    enterprise resources and applications.
  • It introduces accountability and streamlines
    computing needs of an enterprise.

4
Possibilities
  • It is possible to consolidate all the needs of an
organization in a systematic and accountable
    fashion.
  • It is possible to procure computing related
resources similar to how you rent a place for
    living.
  • For example,
  • you can buy storage on demand from amazon.com in
a service it offers called the S3
  • You can buy computation service from amazon.com
in its elastic cloud computing service (EC2)
  • Usage example You are in charge of IT in a local
company. You have an immediate need for backing
up entire set up for a short period of time as a
mock up for disaster recovery. What would you do?

5
A new service model
  • Amazon, Google, IBM, yahoo!, and many prominent
    companies are involved in it.
  • NSF, Computing Research Association (CRA), CCC
(Computing Community Consortium) all support it.

6
What can it do for you?
  • Can quickly launch most applications (ex Web 2.0
    applications)
  • It makes it possible to scale up applications
(tera, peta, and exa bytes of storage as well as
    MFlops of CPU power)
  • It can provide security, isolation and other
    non-functional capabilities also.

7
Usage Scenario
  • Internal innovation
  • Virtual worlds (massively multiplayer online
    games MMPOG)
  • E-business
  • Personal hobbies

8
Architecture (My view adapted from Figure 1 of
IBMs document)
Provisioning Interface
Virtual Machines
Provisioning Manager
servers
storage
Monitoring Manager
9
Features
  • Provisioning manager (IBMs Tivoli) allocates and
    deallocates resources, reserves resources for
suture use runs on (WebSphere) application
    server
  • Provisioning monitor (IBMs Tivoli) monitors the
    health of the allocated resources
  • XEN hypervisor is used for creating virtual
    machines

10
Advantage
  • Typically a pilot team needs about twelve weeks
to identify, procure and build a pilot
infrastructure and additional time to build a
security compliant software stack so that
developers can begin building or deploying
    applications and code.
  • The cloud provides a framework and offering that
reduces the process to approximately 1 hour.
