Mary Quant
She had an art-school background and had been
designing and manufacturing her own clothes since
the late 50's.
4
Her Designs
  • Her designs were mainly black and white but some
were very brightly coloured. In the 1960s she won
a number of design awards and in 1966 Mary Quant
was awarded the OBE. Her designs proved
particularly popular in the sixties, most notably
Mary Quant designed the mini-skirt which became
emblematic of the decade. In 1966 she branched
out by founding Mary Quant Cosmetics.

Her Childhood
  • Mary Quant was born on February 11, 1934 in
London. Her childhood was disrupted by World War
II. In her autobiography Quant by Quant which was
written in 1966 she wrote "Almost my first clear
memory is the day we were evacuated from
Blackheath to a village in Kent." The village
they lived in was on the east coast of England
and it placed the family directly beneath the
path of German planes flying over the coast on
    their way to bomb London.
  • "Because we had no understanding of the grim
tragedies of war," she remembered, "this was
tremendous fun." She would run with her brother,
Tony, and their friends to investigate and
ransack crashed planes, they would take
everything they could carry home to look at.

Mary Quants Famous Bob
  • Vidal Sassoon was one of the most famous and
popular hair stylists in the 1960s. All of his
styles were all incredibly modern. The hairstyles
created by Sassoon needed and suited dark,
dead-straight and shiny hair. Next he expertly
cut into strange shapes, his hair styles were
    rather geometric.
  • In 1963 Sassoon created a short and sweet
hairstyle cut carefully, it was named the bob.
His amazing haircuts were very accurately cut,
but were entirely chemical free, relying on the
natural shine of the hair for the great effect.
  • He thought that hair was nature's biggest
compliment and he said that we have to look
after our hair very carefully. The cut is the
most important element and it gives a mysterious
    look.
  • Haircutting simply means design and this feeling
for design must come from within.' - Vidal
    Sassoon.

Mary Quant Cosmetics
During the 1960s and 70s when Mary Quant was a
designer , there was a growing interest in the
use of natural ingredients in cosmetic products.
Mary Quant branched out and founded her cosmetics
range , it was launched in 1966 and the Special
Recipe range reflected this new interest of
organic ingredients . The natural ingredients
used in the Quant cosmetics were honey, almond
oil, parsley seed oil and herb extracts.

The Miniskirt
  • The 60's were a time of shocks and the mini was
the greatest of them all. Women were allowed to
do more things , have their say and more
importantly allowed free love. As a result skirt
lengths shortened and more skin was shown. With
hemlines rising a new emphasis was seen on the
leg. Stockings became important, with bold
textures, and bright colours and soon complicated
and interesting patterns and great style.
  • Mary Quant was a key in the launch of the mini,
because of course she designed it! It was best
worn by the young, but it caught everyone from
    young girls to grandmothers.

A Shiny Outfit!!!
I like this outfit because it is black shiny and
it looks absolutely great! I like this design
because it is a real what I call LOOK AT ME
outfit. The worst bit about it is the hat as it
looks so strange! I can see why people liked Mary
Quants designs cant you?

How did Mary Quant make a difference?
  • Womens fashion was all very old and she changed
the whole fashion range for women as she made
skirts shorter and made women more confident with
    themselves.

13
Mary Quants inspiration and her models
  • For Mary Quant, there was no such thing as
leaving a stone unturned. She touched and
discovered everything and anything that would
make the life of a woman easier and more
beautiful. For example she created the miniskirt
to make it easier for women to move around and to
have fun. Quant used top models like Twiggy to
personify the young, sweetness and innocence of
her clothing. She also used top model Jean
Shrimpton, who carried off her creations to
perfection. Her fashions were focused on young
girls her designs were bright, sleek lined, and
    easy-to wear.
