Title: Report to ISO TC67 Plenary Meeting Beijing, China 20081029 and 30

1
Report to ISO TC67 Plenary Meeting Beijing,
China - 2008-10-29 and 30
  • WG8 Materials, Corrosion control, welding
    and
  • joining and non-destructive examination
  • Ragnar Mollan, StatoilHydro, Norway
    (Convener)
  • Arlindo Charbel, ABNT, Brazil (Secretariat)

2
  • Reactivated in a meeting held in Houston
    (June/07), WG8 received following recommendations
in ISO TC67 2007 Annual Meeting
  • ISO/TC 67 approves the WG 8 target dates as
presented in document N 993 Add 1, noting that
the materials sections of the product standards
take precedence over the WG 8 documents and that
the document scope and past meeting minutes are
still under discussion (Resolution 20 - Reading,
    2007)
  • ISO/TC67 encourages WG 8 to distribute their
meeting minutes to all affected product related
SCs and WGs and encourages the affected product
related SCs and WGs to distribute their minutes
    to WG 8 (Resolution 21 - Reading, 2007).

3
  • In consequence, the WG8 scope was agreed as
    follows
  • This ISO workgroup provides general principles,
    engineering guidance and requirements for
materials selection and corrosion protection for
    hydrocarbon production and processing facilities
for upstream operations and gives guidance and
    requirements for
  • Materials selection and corrosion evaluation,
  • Corrosion control,
  • Materials selection for specific applications
    and/or systems,
  • Design limitations for specific materials,
  • Qualification of materials and manufacturers.

4
Some issues related to other ISO standards
  • Material requirements in product standards takes
priority over those given in ISO 21457. This has
    been reflected in the wording.
  • There will be no conflicts between this standard
and other similar standards such as ISO 15156 for
sour service, and they will be referenced.

5
ISO Hierarchy Relevant for material requirements
  • Materials requirements in ISO Product standards
  • ISO 13628-1, Subsea production systems. (New
proposed Amendments 12, Clause 6 and Annex L.)
  • Example for production trees
  • ISO 10423 (API 6A), Surface trees
  • ISO 13628-4, Subsea trees
  • Materials requirements in ISO Material Selection
    Standards
  • New Material Selection Standard, ISO 21457
  • Sour service standard, ISO 15156, Part 1-3.
  • Non-metallic materials, ISO 23936, Part 1-5.

6
Functional ? Detailed Technical Requirements
  • How much technical details should be in the new
    ISO materials selection standard?
  • A similar level as the oil companies consider is
necessary as basis for contracts, thereby
minimizing the need for company and project
    specifications.
  • The draft standard refers to materials that are
generally available, with properties that are
known and documented. The standard allows other
materials to be evaluated, their properties
documented and, if suitable, for these other
    materials to be used.
  • The ambition is to cover as much as possible of
    normal needs, say some 80.

7
  • Reactivated in a meeting held in Houston
    (June/07), WG8 received following recommendations
in ISO TC67 2007 Annual meeting
  • ISO/TC 67 approves the WG 8 target dates as
presented in document N 993 Add 1, noting that
the materials sections of the product standards
take precedence over the WG 8 documents and that
the document scope and past meeting minutes are
still under discussion (Resolution 20 - Reading,
    2007)
  • ISO/TC67 encourages WG 8 to distribute their
meeting minutes to all affected product related
SCs and WGs and encourages the affected product
related SCs and WGs to distribute their minutes
    to WG 8 (Resolution 21 - Reading, 2007).

8
  • In order to not conflict with ISO TC67 SC7
projects, the project being developed by WG8 was
renamed to ISO 21457. Its objective remained as
an ISO Standard for material selection for
    upstream operations.
  • The title of ISO 21457 was changed to "Petroleum,
    petrochemical and natural gas industries
Materials selection and corrosion control for oil
and gas production systems". This in order to
better reflect the scope and this is in line with
the title of the ISO standard for H2S containing
service. (ISO 15156 - Petroleum and natural gas
industries -- Materials for use in H2S-containing
environments in oil and gas production )
  • WG8 requests Plenary Meeting a resolution on
    title change

9
Schedule
  • Proposed schedule defined by the ISO TC67
    Secretariat
  • CD 05-2008
  • DIS 05-2009
  • FDIS 03-2010
  • Publication 05-2010.
  • Committee Draft (CD) distributed by ISO
secretariat 29 July 2008 for comments within 29
    October 2008, through the national
    standardisation bodies of the participating
    nations in ISO TC67.
