Historical Review

• In old arab times
• The First Psychiatric Hospital ( Called
  Bimaristan ) in the world was established in
  Damascus in AD(707).
• Other believed that the establishment of the
  first psychiatric hosoital or bimaristan was in
  Baghdad in ad (765)
• Historian L.Libert ( the mentality deranged in
  the east AD (1912 ) ) the first bimaristan or
  asylum was established in Damascus in AD ( 800)
  and in Aleppo in AD (1270 ).

• The turkish era
• we find that the bimaristans were turned into
  prisons where the patients were tied and beaten
  because to get rid of the jinns that were
  believed to be haunting the patient himself.
• Hot and cold water shocks were used alternately
  on the patients body

The new development of mental health in Syria

• Create a district for mental health in the
  Ministry for the first time in Syria dated 9 of
  September 2001 .
• Creation of Syrian Arab association of
  psychiatrists in the year 1997 .
• Redevelopment of the Syrian mental health
  Legislation .
• Adoption the project of the national plan of
  mental health .
• Integrate mental health with primary health care
  since 1991.
• Publishing Special guide of mental health in
  Arabic for general practitioners and health
  workers .

Two psychiatric hospitals in Syria

• The first is in Damascus called Ibn Sina
  ( Avicenna) working since AD 1927.
• The second is in Aleppo called Ibn Khaldoun
  working since 1953.
• Their capacities is 1080 beds , serving
  17 million population.

The new centers

• The works has been began in establishing five
  other centers, each one has 50 beds, they are
  geographically spread.
• The works has been began in establishing
  specialized clinics in the public health sector
  as following
• Five in Damascus ( the capital )
• One in Aleppo ( north of Syria )
• One in Edleb ( north of Syria )
• One in Daraa (south of Syria )
• One in Tartous ( west lea side )
• Two in Homs ( the center of Syria )

Psychiatric specialization

• There are 56 specialized old psychiatrists.
• Since 1995, 18 doctors have been qualified.
• There are 38 residents in this specialization.
• Prescribing a syllabus to teach the specialty of
  psychiatry in the four academic years and that
  was achieved in 2001.
• Making available most of the old and modern
  psychiatric medicine.

The other new development

• The role of psychologists and social workers have
  been admitted.
• Development of child hood mental health.
• Developing centers for addiction treatment with
  capacity of 34 beds now, and increasing it to 50
  beds in damascus and establishing an other center
  in aleppo with 50 beds capacity too.
