Overview of Hard Drive and Its Components

Hard Disk Drive
  • Hard Drive is considered to be one of the
most relevant parts of a computer. It is
basically used to store files and valuable data
into the computer. It was first introduced by IBM
    on September 13, 1956.

4
  • A computer user needs a hard drive for storing
data and program files. Nowadays along with
internal hard drive, external hard drive has
become equally popular. Here some few example of
relevant external hard drives like IBM 2TB hard
drives, HP 652564-B21 hard drive etc.

5
  • Hard Drive consist of six components
  • Head actuator
  • Read/Write actuator
  • Read/Write head
  • Spindle
  • Platter
  • Disk controller

6
  • Actuator
  • It is an electronic device, which is
maintained by a motor that moves the hard drive
    head arm.

7
  • Actuator arm
  • Actuator arm, also known as the access arm it
performs the operation of reading and writing
data to the platter by utilizing its read/write
head which stretches out over the platter.

8
  • Platter
  • The discs which are placed one above the other
are known as platters. It is basically made up of
ceramic and aluminum materials . It is capable of
    holding large amount of data.

9
  • Read/Write head
  • A read/write head performs the task of reading
data from the hard drive's disk platter.
  • Spindle
  • It holds the hard drives platter in a fixed
    position.

10
The process of reading and writing data on a hard
drive
  • Disk controller is responsible for
interpreting the data which are sent to and from
the computer. Whenever you open a file on your
computer for editing, the disk controller
instructs actuator to move the read/write arm and
    align the read/write head.

11
  • After editing the file when you click on the
save option the arm use its write heads to
overwrite the previous file. Now a days some hard
drives operate at a speed of 7,200 rpm.
