What are the Seven Deadly Sins?
  • Defined by Pope Gregory the Great in AD 604
  • Believed to have a fatal effect on spiritual
    health
  • Also known as Seven Capital Sins
  • Are all mentioned in the Bible, but there is no
    cohesive list
  • Each has an opposing virtue

Pride
  • Pride is having an excessively high opinion of
    oneself
  • Its opposing virtue is Humility
  • When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with
    humility comes wisdom. Proverbs 112

Avarice
  • Avarice is an insatiable desire for wealth or
    material goods
  • Its opposing virtue is Generosity
  • A greedy man brings trouble to his family, but
    he who hates bribes will live. Proverbs 1527

Envy
  • Envy is the feeling of resentment and desire for
    anothers belongings
  • Its opposing virtue is Love
  • A heart at peace gives life to the body, but
    envy rots the bones. Proverbs 1430

Wrath
  • Wrath is a vindictive anger or hostility
  • Its opposing virtue is Kindness
  • A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh
    word stirs up anger. Proverbs 151

Lust
  • Lust is an intense or unstrained sexual craving
  • Its opposing virtue is Self-Control
  • But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman
    lustfully has already committed adultery with her
    in his heart. Matthew 528

Gluttony
  • Gluttony is excessive eating or drinking
  • Its opposing virtue is Faith and Temperance
  • Do not join those who drink too much wine or
    gorge themselves on meat, for drunkards and
    gluttons become poor, and drowsiness clothes
    them in rags. Proverbs 2320-21

Sloth
  • Sloth is an aversion to work laziness
  • Its opposing virtue is Zeal
  • Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in
    slave labor. Proverbs 1224
