Title: Detection of Aflatoxins in Agricultural Products

1
Detection of Aflatoxins in Agricultural Products
  • A. Enis Çetin Sabanci University, Tuzla,
    Istanbul
  • Tuna Dogan Adnan Menderes Univ., Aydin
  • Aytül Erçil Sabanci University, Tuzla,Istanbul
  • Yasemin Yardimci Middle East Technical
    University, Ankara
  • Jale Acar Hacettepe Universitesi, Ankara
  • Festo Inc. Germany

2
Motivation
  • Aflatoxins a group of structurally related toxic
compounds produced by certain strains of the
fungi Aspergillus flavus and A. parasiticus.
  • Under favorable conditions of temperature and
humidity, these fungi grow on certain foods and
feeds, resulting in the production of aflatoxins.
  • Contamination has been encountered in tree nuts
(hazel nuts and pistaccihos, pecans), peanuts,
dried figs, red pepper and other oilseeds,
including corn and cottonseed as well as milk.
  • These goods constitute a significant portion of
Turkish exports to Europe. Puts a strain on
Europe/Turkey relations. May affect the lives of
millions of people in Turkey and also in Europe
    if not addressed immediately.

3
Under Food Safety and Health Risks Category
  • Methods of analysis, detection and control The
objective is to contribute to the development,
    improvement, validation and harmonisation of
    reliable and cost-effective sampling and
    measurement strategies for chemical contaminants
    and existing or emerging pathogenic
    micro-organisms (such as viruses, bacteria,
yeasts, fungi...) so as to control the safety of
the food and feed supply and ensure accurate data
    for risk analysis.
  • Research will focus on methods and standards for
analysing and detecting food-borne pathogens and
    chemical contaminants, modelling and approaches
to improve existing prevention and control
    strategies detection tests and geographical
mapping of prions transfer and longevity of
    prions.

4
Aspects to be addressed
  • Evaluation of formation of fungi
  • Microorganism spread
  • Effect of drying techniques
  • Effect of storing techniques
  • Quality Control
  • Based on UV imaging
  • Based on discoloration
  • Fusion and registration
  • A machine which will automatically screen and
    separate contaminated and uncontaminated the
    hazelnuts/pistachios will be developed.

5
