GOSUMEC FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES
  • December 29th 2002 Nilima and I had dinner at
Dean, Nilima Kshirsagars bungalow. In addition
to the Mumbai Municipal Commissioner, Shri Karun
Srivastava and Dr Mayank Doshi our treasurer,
there were several alumni and current faculty
members present at this dinner. Had a chance to
talk at length to Shri Karun Srivastava. He was
keen on knowing more details about the activities
of the GOSUMEC Foundation. Dr. Mayank Doshi ,
and I were able to give the Commissioner a good
perspective into the goals of the foundation and
its activities. He liked what we were doing and
agreed to let Dr. Nilima Kshirsagar go ahead and
establish a similar GOSUMEC Foundation for India.
In the interim we could use the GSMC Diamond
Jubilee Trust Fund to transfer monies from here.

3
GOSUMEC FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES
  • On 30th December at a meeting in the Deans
office, we enumerated several projects that would
require funding from the GOSUMEC Foundation. The
GSMC team would work out the exact costs and
details and forward them to us. The projects
    were
  • a. Upgrading all Audio-Visual Equipment.
  • b.  Upgrading of Library. This project was put on
    priority.
  • c.  Renovation of Laboratories.
  • d.  Further upgrading of alumni office and staff
  • e.  Guest Room/House facility for visiting
    students and faculty.
  • f.  Urgently needed renovation of Men and Womens
    Restrooms.

4
GOSUMEC FOUNDATION ACTIVITIES
  • On January 6th 2003, a meeting was arranged in
the Deans office to meet with the Additional
Municipal Commissioner, Shri S. J. Kunte who had
several questions about the workings of the
GOSUMEC Foundation. Present at the meeting were
the Dean, Dr. Nilima Kshirsagar, Drs. Lopa Mehta,
Avinash Supe, Vinita Salvi, Nilima Patwardhan,
and myself. We were able answer all his questions
and by the end of the meeting he was comfortable
with the workings of the foundation and the UMMS
affiliation process. I think we should now be
able to establish a creative working relationship
with the Municipal Commissioners office, GOSUMEC
Foundation, GSMC, UMMS, and the Dean and her
    staff.

SETH G. S. MEDICAL COLLEGE (GSMC) and

    Sunderdas Medical College, India
  • and
  • University of Massachusetts Medical School,
    Worcester, Massachusetts, USA

6
SETH G. S. MEDICAL COLLEGE (GSMC) and
UNIVERSITY OF
MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL (UMMS) AFFILIATION
  • Cultural and educational exchange is critical
for the development of medicine in the 21st
Century. The Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical
College (GSMC) and the University of
Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) realize there
is an unprecedented opportunity for both medical
schools to work together in the areas of medical
science and medical education which will
ultimately benefit our patients. Therefore, the
UMMS and the GSMC in conjunction with the GOSUMEC
Foundation, are establishing an exchange program
to foster both the exchange and collaboration of
the medical education systems in both countries,
as well as a more extensive cultural
understanding of both countries. As opportunity
and mutual interest occur, the program will be
open to medical students from both institutions.
Reciprocal benefits to each institution include
    increased cultural understanding, mutual respect
for differences in educational philosophy and
differences in approach to health care.

7
SETH G. S. MEDICAL COLLEGE (GSMC) and
UNIVERSITY OF
MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL (UMMS) AFFILIATION

completed most of their clinical rotations.

    provided by the GOSUMEC Foundation.
  • 5.    The normal length of an exchange will be
    two months duration for students.
  • 6.   Students from GSMC will visit UMMS during

(GSMC), was held on Monday 30th December 2002 at

SETH G. S. MEDICAL COLLEGE (GSMC) and
UNIVERSITY OF
MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL (UMMS) AFFILIATION
  • Dr. Avinash Patwardhan presented a brochure on
UMMS and the draft of the letter of understanding
for an exchange program between GSMC and UMMS
that was prepared by Dr. Michael Godkin, Director
of International Medical Education at UMMS.
  • All the issues outlined in the letter of
understanding from UMMS were basically acceptable
to the group and the general consensus was to
    proceed with the affiliation process.
  • It was discussed that there would be no
difficulty in setting up a program for students
from UMMS to visit GSMC as such a program already
exists for foreign students. However, GSMC will
have to obtain specific clearances, permission
and recognition from the Maharashtra University
of Health Sciences (MUHS), for the time spent by
students from GSMC at UMMS. Until this is
established students from GSMC will not be able
to participate in the exchange program. The
Deans office at GSMC will go ahead and initiate
this process with MUHS to meet the necessary
    requirements.

SETH G. S. MEDICAL COLLEGE (GSMC) and
UNIVERSITY OF
MASSACHUSETTS MEDICAL SCHOOL (UMMS) AFFILIATION
  • 4. The possibility of sending interns from GSMC
to UMMS was also discussed. It was argued that
since interns do not come under the jurisdiction
of MUHS it would be easy for GSMC to send interns
across to UMMS for an elective rotation. A
possible exchange of faculty members was also
discussed, but Dr. Patwardhan stated that UMMS
had expressed specific interest in undergraduate
students rather than interns, residents or
faculty. He was asked to explore and discuss
these alternative possibilities with UMMS on his
    return to Worcester.

  • It was also agreed that the Mumbai Municipal
Commissioners office and the GOSUMEC Foundation,
be kept abreast of all these discussions. As
such a tentative meeting with Mr. S. J. Kunte,
Additional Municipal Commissioner, was set up for
    Monday January 6, 2003.
  • 6. Dr. Avinash Patwardhan also gave the group an
update on all the current activities of the
GOSUMEC Foundation and its possible level of
    involvement in this affiliation project.

Nilima and I had a great time visiting GSMC
and KEMH. The Dean, Dr. Nilima Kshirsagar was
most gracious and helpful in making this mission
successful. Drs. Manu Kothari, Lopa Mehta, Vinita
Salvi, Avinash Supe, Ravi Bapat, G.B.Parulkar,
Sharad Gogate, Ravi Ramakantan, and many others
gave us such a warm welcome and made our visit to
GSMC really memorable. As you can see from the
presentation, our meetings went off smoothly and
we did come up with a lot of creative ideas. With
generous support of all the alumni in India and
abroad I am sure we will be able to achieve our
goals and push GSMC to new levels of
excellence. Please feel free to give me your
feedback. You can email me at
