Neighborhood Fairs
  • The first Neighborhood Fair was held June 7,
    2008, on the campus of Central High School.
    Families and community members were able to
    participate in games, enjoy carnival food and
    learn about District programs and activities.
    Mayor Mark Funkhouser attended the event. This
    was the first of four planned fairs this summers.
  • Upcoming fairs include (2 to 6 p.m.)

Honors
  • Garfield Elementary was honored by the Rotary
    International Club, 13 of Kansas City, Missouri
    with its Excellence in Education Award for
    Significant Contribution to Overall Excellence in
    the Kansas City, Missouri School District. The
    award was presented on May 31, 2008.
  • This is the second award for Garfield Elementary.
    The school maintained excellent academic
    achievement for the past three years to qualify
    for the award.

Honors
  • Joseph Williams of Van Horn High was elected
    president of the Kansas City Guidance Association
    for the 2008-2009 school year. The association
    represents more than 100 local members of the
    Missouri School Counselors Association. Dr.
    Ernest Middleton of Van Horn was elected as the
    president-elect for 2010.
  • Mindy Monceret of Trailwoods Elementary was
    selected Middle School Counselor of the Year.
    Mindy is the sole counselor at Trailwoods.

Honors
  • Emiliano Zapata Rodolfo Marron, students at
    Paseo Academy, and teacher Jessica Manco were
    part of a gallery exhibition for the Urban
    Culture Projects La Esquina Gallery. The show
    opened on June 6, 2008. Zapata, a 2008 graduate,
    was interviewed by KCTV-5 in conjunction with the
    event.
  • The Lincoln Prep basketball camp was featured
    today on KMBC Channel 9s First News morning
    show. Young campers and 2008 All-Metro Basketball
    Coach of The Year Marshall Draper were featured.

Honors
  • Omar Safir of Lincoln Prep left June 7, 2008, for
    the week-long Summer Leaders Seminar at the
    United States Military Academy at West Point. The
    seminar is for academically-gifted high school
    juniors.
  • East Elementary raised 2,272.36 for students in
    Pakistan by collecting small change and spare
    coins. The effort was part of the Pennies for
    Peace program.
