Problems With The River
  • More then 1,683,500 sq km of territory are
drained by the Yangtze and its branches.
  • In the 20th Century, floods occurred in 1905,
    1980 and 1981.
  • In July 1995, floods were described as being a
Once in a hundred years severity. This was
caused by melting of usually permanent snow in
the Yangtze mountains headwaters. The outcome was
    1,200 deaths.
  • Three years later, torrential rain caused the
worst floods in 30 years. The flooding lasted
three months, from June to August, causing over
    3,000 deaths.

9
Three Gorges Dam
  • Introduced to address the problem of flooding.
  • Situated in Sandouping
  • Scheduled for completion in 2009.
  • It will be 185m high, holding a reservoir of
    1,084 sq km in area.
  • Twenty six generators, producing 18,200 megawatts
    of electricity, the largest hydroelectric
    facility in the world.
  • It will produce 10 of Chinas electricity needs,
    and reduce flooding.

10
Economy
  • The Yangtze river provides a great transport
network through the heart of some of the most
    densely populated and economically important
    areas in China.
  • One of the chief rice-growing areas in China.
  • The average discharge of water at its mouth is 34
    million litres per second.
