  • Rolnick (1984) is cited for the use of an
affirmative internal dialogue to reduce the
effects of motion sickness, which was also
covered in the 1890s in that humming the Winnie
the Pooh song served to reduce symptoms by
raising the subjects spirits and controlling
    their respiration (Reason, 1975).
  • According to the literature reviewed in Reason
    (1975), psychological factors affecting motion
sickness are etiologically distinct from the
    sickness caused by motion.
  • Seasickness and performance correlated -.72
evidencing the expected deleterious impact of
seasickness on performance and underscoring the
    practical importance of abating seasickness.
Although strong, this relationship leaves half of
the variance in performance to be explained by
    other determinants. (Eden, 1995)

  • The hypogastric belt invented by Levilly in
    1853 (Reason, 1975).
  • A more sinister variant on this theme was
devised by Harris (1887)a pad in the epigastrum
another in the small of the back a mild
galvanic current to pass between the two. Other
    mechanical remedies included hammocks strung
amidships with long strings (Stevens, 1838), and
a variety of articulated cabins or couches that
neutralized the rolling motion of the ship (Anon,
    1862). (Reason, 1975)
  • Nonetheless, Bertolucci and DiDario did have
significant treatment effects, they just could
not explain the mechanism affected by
    acustimulation at P6.

  • dry toast, gruel and sago, to exotic feasts
consisting in one instance of soup made of horse
radish and rice, seasoned with red herrings and
sardines (Anon, 1862). These were to be washed
down with a variety of beverages including tea,
coffee, champagne (a great favorite), brandy or
    spirits (Reason, 1975).
  • Thurston (1887) who, on the basis of the
abdominal vacuum theory, recommended that the
intending passenger should consume pickled onions
prior to embarkation so that the resulting gas
might distend the stomach and thus maintain a
steady pressure within the abdominal cavity
    (Reason, 1975).
  • My personal favorite amalgamation from the
literature concerning dietary effects on motion
sickness2 measures of gin, ¼ measure of dry
vermouth, garnished with pickled onionsa.k.a. a
Gibson Martini. Perfect for washing down your
    Dramamine.

than submit to the degradation of anal
