2
The Five Building Blocks of a Comprehensive
Reading Program
  • Phonemic Awareness
  • Phonics
  • Vocabulary
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Reading Fluency

3
Phonemic Awareness
  • must be taught before the other four building
    blocks.
  • is the oral skill that students learn. (Letter
    Sounds)

4
Technology Activities that Encourage Phonemic
Awareness Development
  • Match Rhyming Words a teacher makes a template
on a drawing program and students draw a line to
    the words that match.
  • Rhyming Poetry students start by brainstorming
words that rhyme then write a poem. Once the
poem is written, students word process the poem
and use either bold or italic style to highlight
    rhyming words.
  • Students should also use the spell-checker.

5
Learning the Letters
  • This is a website that students could use when
beginning to learn the sounds each letter makes.

6
Phonics
  • Students learn the sound symbol relationship.
  • Students blend the sounds together to begin to
    make words.
  • Students learn words and then learn the sound
that each letter or combination of letters make.

7
Activities with Phonics
  • Recognition of Beginning Sounds In this
activity, students are given 6 letter boxes. They
find pictures or stamps in the program to put
into the boxes that start with those letters.
  • Recognition of Beginning Sounds Matching
Students match the letter to the beginning sound
    in the picture.
  • Alphabet Book Each student is given a letter
then finds as many pictures as he/she can that
    start with that sound.
  • Syllable Recognition Students are given a
template and they type the word in the box that
    has that number of syllables.

8
Learning the Alphabet Symbols
  • Click on the following website to see a movie
that could be shown to students explaining how
    the alphabet got its order.

9
Vocabulary
  • Students are learning new words based on root
    words, suffixes and prefixes.
  • This may happen with word walls or many other
    activities in the school.
  • Students learn what the word is along with the
    meaning of the word.

10
Teaching Vocabulary with Technology
  • Synonyms Using a word processor, students are
given sentences and they use the thesaurus to
find words that are synonyms and replace the
    italicized words.
  • Antonyms Students are given a list of antonyms
on the computer and they draw a line connecting
    the antonyms.
  • Homophones Using a drawing program, students
are given a pair of homophones and they must make
two pictures depicting the different meanings.

11
Word Play
  • An activity where students click on the word to
have the word demonstrate the meaning.
  • http//pbskids.org/lions/games/
  • A game that teaches synonyms-- better for the
    older levels.

    tm

12
Comprehension
  • happens when students read text and the level of
    understanding is measured.
  • Some students must be taught how to make sure
they are comprehending what is being read.

13
Activities the Encourage Comprehension
  • Students read a story---then play a game or
    answer questions at the end.
  • The following website has many examples of
    stories.
  • http//pbskids.org/lions/stories/

14
Fluency
  • The goal of fluency is to read with rapid word
    recognition and comprehension.
  • Fluency also includes expression and knowing
where and how long to pause when reading.

15
Other Aspects of Language Arts
16
Parts of Speech
  • Often students will be learning the eight parts
of speech noun, pronoun, adjective, adverb,
    verb, conjunction, interjection, preposition.

17
Activities for Parts of Speech
  • Spelling Check students are given a list of
words that they type into a spreadsheet.
Students will use the spell check to make sure
words are spelled correctly, then they categorize
each of the words into what type of speech each
is. Students then make a graph.
  • Nouns Students are given a noun and they find
the definition. Then, using a paint program, they
find or create a picture that represents the
noun. On the page, students also create a
    sentence using the noun correctly.

18
Parts of Speech
  • Verbs each student is given a worksheet. He/she
must highlight the word that is a verb in the
list. Then they must construct a sentence using
    that verb.
  • Adjective Students are given a worksheet with a
picture and several words that are printed in
boxes. Students must use the paint bucket to
fill in boxes that are adjectives.

19
Teaching Parts of Speech with Games
  • Teaches the difference between the types of
    nouns.

20
Writing Ideas
  • Story Starters Students are given one or two
sentences on a card. They type the sentences and
    continue writing/creating a story.
  • Tall Tales Students are given a tall tale
topic. They write a story then draw a picture to
    exaggerate the story.

21
Word Play Comic Strip
  • Students can create a comic strip and words to go
with it. This may be a way to get students
interested in writing, if they are not.
