Ardgillan Castle
  • Ardgillan is situated on the elevated coastline
    between Balbriggan and the Skerries.
  • The park consists of 194 acres of rolling
    pastureland, mixed woodland and gardens,
    overlooking the bay of Drogheda.
  • Ardgillan - meaning high-wooded area, is a
sanctuary for many species of mammals and birds.
  • The Castle was built in 1738.

6
Dublin Castle
  • Dublin Castle is the heart of historic Dublin. In
fact the city gets its name from the Black Pool -
'Dubh Linn' which was on the site of the present
    Castle garden.
  • The Castle stands on the ridge on a strategic
site at the junction of the River Liffey and its
tributary the Poddle, where the original
fortification may have been an early Gaelic Ring
    Fort.
  • Later a Viking Fortress stood on this site - a
portion of which is on view to visitors at the
    'Undercroft'.
  • The south range houses the magnificent State
Apartments that were built as the residential
quarters of the viceregal court. They are now the
venue for Ireland's Presidencies of the European
    Community, Presidential Inaugurations and State
    Functions.

7
Ha'penny Bridge
  • The Ha'penny Bridge is Dublin's oldest pedestrian
crossing over the River Liffey. It was built in
1816 as the Wellington Bridge and it acquired its
better known nickname from the halfpenny toll
levied on all users of the bridge up to 1919.It
is one of the earliest cast-iron structures of
    its kind.

8
Newbridge House and Traditional Farm
  • This delightful 18th Century manor is set on 350
acres of parkland, twelve miles north of the city
centre and boasts one of the finest Georgian
interiors in Ireland. Each room open to the
public has its own style of antique and original
furniture indeed, the house appears more or
less as it did 150 years ago.The house was
built in 1740 to a design by James Gibb for the
Archbishop of Dublin The grounds also contain a
twenty-nine acre traditional farm, complete with
farmyard animals, a delight to any young visitor
and perfect for school tours and large groups.

9
Saint Patrick's Cathedral
  • Saint Patrick's Cathedral has contributed much to
Irish life throughout its long history (it was
founded in 1191). The writer and satirist
Jonathan Swift was Dean of Saint Patrick's from
1713-1747. Handel's Messiah received its first
performance in 1742 sung by the combined choir of
Saint Patrick's and Christchurch. Music has
played an integral part in the life of Saint
Patrick's since its foundation and it is the only
cathedral in these islands to sing two services
    everyday.

10
The Oscar Wilde House, Trinity College
  • The house is an excellent example of Georgian
architecture as its many remarkable cornices,
    architraves and decorative centrepieces
    demonstrate throughout the house.The Wilde
family took up residence in Number One, Merrion
Square in 1855 and Oscar Wilde lived here until
1876.American College Dublin took over the house
in January 1994 and as a result of a major
restoration project the ground and first floors
of the house are now open for guided tours.
  • Trinity College is the oldest university in
    Ireland.
  • Founded in 1592 by Queen Elizabeth I, the
College is in an enviable position in the very
heart of Ireland's capital. The College is famed
for the great treasures. These include the BOOK
OF KELLS, a 19th century illuminated manuscript,
the Books of Durrow and Armagh and an early Irish
harp. These are displayed in the Treasury and the
Long Room which houses over 200,000 of Trinity's
    oldest books.
