Report Poison Ivy
  • Carbon dioxide is the main food source of plants,
    especially poison ivy.
  • Poison Ivy takes in 5 times more carbon dioxide
    then the average tree.
  • Scientists are predicting that increased
temperature, moisture, and carbon dioxide will
lead to a more widespread and a more potent
    poison ivy.

3
Negative or Positive?
  • Certainly nobody wants more poison ivy. Lets face
it if you have ever had it you know its very
uncomfortable. But may increased amounts of
poison ivy potentially slow down the process of
    global warming? If so why?

4
Poison Ivy
  • Poison ivy although a major annoyance, will taken
in large amounts of carbon dioxide and
effectively aide in keeping the planet cooler.
Keeping data on the amount of poison ivy that is
growing in a certain area can give you
information about the how a plant population
    responds to climate change.

5
Activity
  • Setting a baseline Record the amount of poison
    ivy plants on a transect.
  • Take pictures and record total population of
poison ivy plants, as well as other plants on the
    transect.
  • Do not touch any of the plants!
  • Where gloves, and use a tape measure to measure
    area.

6
Transect
  • A transect is a line in which measurements or
    data are to be collected.
  • Measure off a 5 ft by 20 ft transect- make sure
there is some poison ivy plants along the
    transect.
  • Take pictures of your transect
  • Count all poison ivy plants
  • Count all other plants
  • Measure height of plants (do so with out getting
    to close) approximate if necessary

7
Assessment
  • Students will save photos in a file titled
  • PI transect study June 2007
  • The file will include a written report including
  • the photos of all plants in transect
  • total number of each plant in transect
  • height of ivy plants
  • names of other plants in transect
  • Location of transect
