  • Prepared for Third Grade Science Class

2
What are Penguins?
  • They are fish-eating seabirds.
  • They can not fly but have feathers, wings and
    beaks.
  • Have very short legs far back on their bodies
    that are used for swimming

3
Where do Penguins live?
  • Penguins usually live by the water on islands.
  • Some live on tropical islands where it is sunny
    and hot
  • Others live in Antarctica where it is very snowy
    and cold.

4
Map of Where Penguins Live
  • This map of the world shows us where penguins
live. Lets find the blue areas in the map to see
    where we could find penguins.

5
How do Penguins Stay Warm in Cold Weather?
  • Penguins have a layer of fat under their skin
    called blubber.
  • Over this blubber they have fluffy feathers.
  • Penguins stand very close to each other with
their wings down to stay warm.

6
  • Penguins also have a special oil they put over
their feathers. This protects them from cold
    water and wind.

7
What do Penguins Eat?
  • Penguins love eating fish
  • Other things they like to eat are squid and
    octopus.
  • Penguins drink salt water instead of fresh water
    like you and me.

8
How do Penguins Have Babies?
  • The mother penguin will lay one or two eggs at a
    time.
  • Both parents take turns staying at the nest
watching and waiting for the eggs to hatch.

9
When the egg hatches
  • The baby chick starts singing so its parents will
    recognize his voice.
  • When the chick is strong enough he is left with
many other baby chicks while the parents look for
    food.

10
How long does it take a baby penguin to grow up?
  • It takes between one and two years for a baby
    penguin to become an adult.
  • You can tell how old a penguin is by looking at
    his feathers.

11
How Long Do Penguins Live?
  • In the wild penguins live 15 to 20 years.
  • If they live in a protected area like a zoo
    penguins can live much longer.

12
What do Penguins do for fun?
  • Penguins love to dive in the water. They often
line up and dive off cliffs.
  • Penguins also love to go surfing. They surf the
    waves onto land.
