  • City of Hampton undertaking citywide floodplain
    study
  • 19 sub-watersheds including Fort Monroe
  • City Council to vote on prioritization of
    studies in approx. 30 days

Sea Level Rise and Flood Insurance Update
  • Building elevations on Fort range from 4 to 9
  • 100-year base flood elevation is 9
  • Wetlands Watch and National Wildlife Federation
    Study predict sea level rise from 24 to 27 over
    next century
  • Determinations of flood insurability will
    require further coordination between City,
    Commonwealth and FEMA

Recommendations
  • Request City of Hampton give Fort Monroe a high
    priority for their floodplain study.
  • Continue discussions with Hampton and Newport
    News regarding future governance of Fort and
    disposition of infrastructure.
  • If Hampton and Newport News ownership of
    infrastructure is desired, then undertake
    conditional assessment studies to determine costs
    for additional upgrades.

Recommendations - Continued
  • Identify sources for and obtain funding to
    complete flood protection project.
  • Begin discussions with Virginia Power to
    determine costs for power distribution
    infrastructure replacement.
