Mixed Signal Devices for Low/High
Temperature(new for FY04)
Description
Benefits
Reliability assessment of mixed signal devices
under low/high temperatures and dissemination of
this information will impact mission planners and
system designers in terms of proper electronic
component selection, optimal circuit design, and
relaxed thermal constraints.
Many deep space and planetary exploration
missions require electronic components and
systems that can operate reliably and efficiently
in extreme temperature environments far below or
above typical specification temperatures. These
missions include Mars exploration rovers, JWST,
Europa Obiter, Mars Flyer, and Orbital Space
Plane. This task, through collaborative efforts
between NASA centers and JPL, will establish a
database of the reliability of mixed signal
devices for use in aerospace missions. This will
be accomplished via thorough evaluation of
mission-related devices under extreme
temperatures and thermal cycling. Safe operating
areas and degradation modes or failure mechanisms
will be determined and used to establish risk
factors for use of such devices in cold/hot space
applications.

Special Commercial (L) and Aerospace (R)
Transistors for Ultra-Low Temperatures
This knowledge will result in simpler, more
robust, lighter, and more reliable systems for
space missions. These attributes will translate
into low launch costs and increased payload
capacity.
Deliverables
  • Survey of NASA projects requiring operation of
mixed signal devices at low/high temperatures.
  • -Data report documenting reliability of selected
mixed signal devices for extreme temperature
    operation.
