Defining Styles
  • A style is a defined set of text and formatting
    attributes
  • Specially crafted packages of formatting that
    apply many attributes at once.
  • Instead of applying each thing individually, you
    apply the style once and you're done.
  • Styles are viewed and applied using the Styles
    and Formatting task pane

Style Types Paragraph styles Character style
  • Paragraph styles include not just font type and
    size but also formatting for a whole paragraph's
    text positioning and spacing. A paragraph style
    can be applied to more paragraphs.
  • Character style applied at the character levelto
    blocks of words and letters.

  • Click a style in task pane to apply it.
  • Can apply it in multiple places at once.
  • click the style, such as Heading 1, once to apply
    it in multiple places.
  • can also modify that style.

  • A style can be built on other styles. Compare
    Heading 1 style, with Normal and its own
    customizations.

  • To apply a style
  • Select the text you want to format
  • Click the style
  • in the Style list, or the
  • Styles and Formatting task pane

  • Position the pointer over the style you want to
    modify (in the Pick formatting to apply list in
    the Styles and Formatting task pane)
  • Click the styles list arrow
  • Click Modify

Changing a Format into a Style
  • Create a style by example a style created when
    you dont know all of the attributes
  • Select the text whose formatting you want to use
  • Type a name in the Style text box
  • Press Enter

Adding Drop Caps
  • A drop cap is a formatting attribute that
    enlarges the first character in a story or
    paragraph
  • Click the paragraph where you want the drop cap
  • Click Format on the menu bar, then click Drop Cap
  • Click the Custom Drop Cap tab
  • Select style, then click OK

  • Use a drop cap to elegantly emphasize the first
    letter on the page.

Tab Settings
  • The tab button on the keyboard creates a tab
    character (?), which pushes text to the closest
    tab stop to its right.
  • Default tabs at every half-inch (0.5) left tabs
  • When your rulers are turned on (View-gtRulers),
    able to see where the default tabs are set on
    your ruler, appear as tick marks at regular
    intervals on horizontal ruler.
  • Use format tab settings

  • To set a tab, in the TabsTo set a tab with the
    ruler, click the tab stop indicator
  • Then click on the horizontal ruler where you want
    to set the tab stop.
  • New tab stop will appear on the ruler

  • Can quickly set up margins, tab stops, and
    hanging indents the horizontal ruler.
  • The horizontal ruler is the bar across the top of
    your document with measurements marked out on it.

TAB STOPS
  • LEFT TAB STOP, Text aligns on the left, and
    flows to the right.
  • CENTER TAB STOP, Text aligns in the middle,
    and flows left then right then left then
  • RIGHT TAB STOP, Text aligns on the right, and
    flows to the left.
  • DECIMAL TAB STOP, Text aligns on the right,
    and flows to the left until the decimal/period.
  • BAR TAB STOP, Text does not respond to this
    tab stop, but it does create a vertical line.
  • TEXT
  • LEFT TAB STOP, WITH DOT LEADER, Text aligns on
    the left, and flows to the right.

    displays light characters against a dark
    background
