Background of the issue

• Tuesday the Massachusetts Supreme court ruled
  that Gay marriages would be allowed and
  recognized by the state.

Why are Democrats worried?

• Democrats say no to gay marriages
• Most of Americans tend to show support for
  granting gay couples marriage rights
• Democrats just trying to say that they put the
  choice on the states, but that is not happening

How this affects Bush

• If the president gets out front of this issue,
  Democrats will publicly oppose and constitutional
  amendment.
• This allows Republicans to argue that Dem. Are
  out of step with the American people

• Gephardt
• Retired Gen. Wesley Clark
• Sen. John Edwards
• Gov. Howard Dean, who is the front runner as of
  now

• All three candidates are considered long shots
  for nomination.

• Have to approved by 2/3 vote of each house of
  congress
• If Democrats stand united in the opposition, they
  have more than enough votes to block it

• Opposes same-sex marriages
• Has not stated whether he would support this
  amendment
• Said he would work with congressional leaders
  and others to do what is legally necessary to
  defend the sanctity of marriage
