What is Missions? Slide 67
  • Jesus said, ". . . All authority has been given
to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
commanded you and lo, I am with you always, even
to the end of the age." (Matthew 2818-20)

3
  • The old seminaries used to teach their young men
studying to be pastors a simple but forgotten
truth the mark of a great church is not its
seating capacity, but its sending capacity.
  • In other words, its not how many attendees you
have, but how many you have sent out that counts.

4
Biblical Missions
  • Fulfills the scriptures
  •         Continues Jesus ministry after his
    death and resurrection
  •         Acts out of and offers repentance and
    forgiveness of sins
  •         Is brought to everyone, beginning in
    Jerusalem
  •         Is carried out by witnesses under the
    power of the Holy Spirit.

5
  • Luke 2444-49
  •             Then he opened their minds to
understand the scriptures, and he said to them,
Thus it is written, that the Messiah is to
suffer and to rise from the dead on the third
day, and that repentance and forgiveness of sins
is to be proclaimed in his name to all nations,
beginning from Jerusalem.  You are witness of
these things.  And see, I am sending upon you
what my Father promised so stay here in the city
until you have been clothed with power from on
    high.

6
  • Many Christians come to church and want to be
filled with the Spirit. For what purpose? To
experience some emotional high, to feel powerful
and gifted, or to go out and preach the Gospel?

7
  • Acts 16-8
  •             So when they had come together, they
asked him, Lord, is this the time when you will
restore the kingdom to Israel?  He replied, It
is not for you to know the times or periods that
the Father has set by his own authority.  But you
will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come
upon you and you will be my witnesses in
Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the
    ends of the earth.

8
  • Biblical missions is nothing more or less than
obedience to the command of Christ to go and make
    disciples of all the nations.
  • A biblical missions philosophy is that which will
execute this mandate in a manner consistent with
    all of God's revealed Word.

9
  • The Church will accomplish its mission mandate
only if it returns to doing God's ministry God's
    way.
  • Now all these things are from God, who
reconciled us to Himself through Christ, and gave
us the ministry of reconciliation, namely, that
God was in Christ reconciling the world to
Himself, not counting their trespasses against
them, and He has committed to us the word of
    reconciliation. Therefore, we are ambassadors
for Christ, as though God were entreating through
us we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled
    to God.
  • (2 Corinthians 518-20 NAS)

10
Pauls Example
  • Act 1716 Now while Paul was waiting for them at
Athens, his spirit was being provoked within him
as he was observing the city full of idols.
  • Act 1717 So he was reasoning in the synagogue
with the Jews and the God-fearing Gentiles, and
in the market place every day with those who
    happened to be present.

11
  • Act 1732 Now when they heard of the
resurrection of the dead, some began to sneer,
but others said, "We shall hear you again
    concerning this."
  • Act 1733 So Paul went out of their midst.
  • Act 1734 But some men joined him and believed,
among whom also were Dionysius the Areopagite and
a woman named Damaris and others with them.

12
Pauls Mission Program
  • Go to a city
  • First declare the Gospel to the religious of the
    city
  • Then to those in the market place and around the
    town
  • Then to those who rule
  • If any believe, find a house to start discipling
them. This became the Church in that town.

13
  • Act 1612 and from there to Philippi, which is a
leading city of the district of Macedonia, a
Roman colony and we were staying in this city
    for some days.
  • Act 1613 And on the Sabbath day we went outside
the gate to a riverside, where we were supposing
that there would be a place of prayer and we sat
down and began speaking to the women who had
    assembled.

14
  • Act 1614 A woman named Lydia, from the city of
Thyatira, a seller of purple fabrics, a worshiper
of God, was listening and the Lord opened her
heart to respond to the things spoken by Paul.
  • Act 1615 And when she and her household had
been baptized, she urged us, saying, "If you have
judged me to be faithful to the Lord, come into
my house and stay." And she prevailed upon us.

15
  • Phm 12 and to Apphia our sister, and to
Archippus our fellow soldier, and to the church
    in your house
  • More on Pauls missions later
  • How does the church do missions today?

16
How most mission programs are run today
  • Our missions programs today do the same thing
we attempt to westernize a people more than we
    attempt to give them Jesus.
  • With western thought, the credo of missions
agencies is, How can they hear the gospel if
they dont have all their physical needs met
    first?

17
  • This was NEVER the practice of missions in the
Bible they simple went and preached the gospel.
  • So they base this western view of mission on what
    verse?
  • The good Samaritan.
  • This story is not about missions its not even
about evangelism. Its about loving your
    neighbor.

18
  • Neighbor means
  • play-see'-on
  • Neuter of a derivative of pe?a? pelas (near)
(adverb) close by as noun, a neighbor, that is,
fellow (as man, countryman, Christian or friend)
    - near, neighbour.

19
  • The intent of this story is if you see someone in
your routine who is in need, help them!
  • This is not a model for evangelism or for
    missions.
  • Who are we commanded to help in scripture?

20
  • Eph 424 and put on the new self, which in the
likeness of God has been created in righteousness
    and holiness of the truth.
  • Eph 425 Therefore, laying aside falsehood,
SPEAK TRUTH EACH ONE of you WITH HIS NEIGHBOR,
for we are members of one another.

21
  • Who are we members of one another with?
  • Two groups1.Family2.Church

22
Family
  • Eph 528 So husbands ought also to love their
own wives as their own bodies. He who loves his
    own wife loves himself
  • Eph 529 for no one ever hated his own flesh,
but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ
    also does the church,
  • Eph 530 because we are members of His body.
  • Eph 531 FOR THIS REASON A MAN SHALL LEAVE HIS
FATHER AND MOTHER AND SHALL BE JOINED TO HIS
WIFE, AND THE TWO SHALL BECOME ONE FLESH.

23
Church
  • 1Co 1212 For even as the body is one and yet
has many members, and all the members of the
body, though they are many, are one body, so also
    is Christ.
  • 1Co 1213 For by one Spirit we were all baptized
into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether
slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of
    one Spirit.
  • 1Co 1214 For the body is not one member, but
    many.

24
Modern Missions
  • Identify a physical need in a village
  • Go meet that need and thereby earn the right to
    preach the Gospel
  • Show the Jesus film
  • Take pictures
  • Come home
  • Repeat

25
  • The village becomes dependant on who with this
    model?
  • If fact, in scripture, we are always commanded to
meet the Spiritual need before we meet a physical
    need!
  • Spiritual needs are more important than physical
    needs!

26
  • Mat 92 And they brought to Him a paralytic
lying on a bed. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to
the paralytic, "Take courage, son your sins are
    forgiven."
  • Mat 93 And some of the scribes said to
    themselves, "This fellow blasphemes."
  • Mat 94 And Jesus knowing their thoughts said,
"Why are you thinking evil in your hearts?
  • Mat 95 "Which is easier, to say, 'Your sins are
forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up, and walk'?
  • Mat 96 "But so that you may know that the Son
of Man has authority on earth to forgive
sins"--then He said to the paralytic, "Get up,
pick up your bed and go home."

27
  • Joh 413 Jesus answered and said to her,
"Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst
    again
  • Joh 414 but whoever drinks of the water that I
will give him shall never thirst but the water
that I will give him will become in him a well of
water springing up to eternal life."

28
  • Mat 2537 "Then the righteous will answer Him,
'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You,
or thirsty, and give You something to drink?
  • Mat 2538 'And when did we see You a stranger,
and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
  • Mat 2539 'When did we see You sick, or in
    prison, and come to You?'
  • Mat 2540 "The King will answer and say to them,
'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did
it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the
least of them, you did it to Me.'

29
Who are Jesus brothers?
  • Mat 1246 While He was still speaking to the
crowds, behold, His mother and brothers were
standing outside, seeking to speak to Him.
  • Mat 1247 Someone said to Him, "Behold, Your
mother and Your brothers are standing outside
    seeking to speak to You."
  • Mat 1248 But Jesus answered the one who was
telling Him and said, "Who is My mother and who
    are My brothers?"
  • Mat 1249 And stretching out His hand toward His
disciples, He said, "Behold My mother and My
    brothers!

Part Two 9-20-08
31
What is Missions?
  • Jesus said, ". . . All authority has been given
to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and
make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in
the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy
Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I
commanded you and lo, I am with you always, even
to the end of the age." (Matthew 2818-20)

32
I pray that you may be active in sharing your
faith, so that you will have a full understanding
of every good thing we have in Christ. Philemon
v. 6
33
  • The old seminaries used to teach their young men
studying to be pastors a simple but forgotten
truth the mark of a great church is not its
seating capacity, but its sending capacity.
  • Are Pastors equipping the saints and sending them
out to be ministers, ambassadors, witnesses?
    SALT AND LIGHT!!!

34
Biblical Missions
  • Makes disciples, not just converts!
  • Is more concerned about peoples Spiritual needs
then their physical needs (Luke 518-24)
  • Is the main reason we have the empowering and
gifting of the Holy Spirit (Acts 18)
  • Is more concerned with reaching the lost then
    simply bringing in the saved
  • It is who we are (or should be), not a program or
    an event

35
  • Mat 1250 "For whoever does the will of My
Father who is in heaven, he is My brother and
    sister and mother."
  • It is this group born again believers, that
Jesus says we should meet their physical needs

36
  • Mat 2537 "Then the righteous will answer Him,
'Lord, when did we see You hungry, and feed You,
or thirsty, and give You something to drink?
  • Mat 2538 'And when did we see You a stranger,
and invite You in, or naked, and clothe You?
  • Mat 2539 'When did we see You sick, or in
    prison, and come to You?'
  • Mat 2540 "The King will answer and say to them,
'Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did
it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the
least of them, you did it to Me.'

37
  • Gal 69 Let us not lose heart in doing good, for
in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.
  • Gal 610 So then, while we have opportunity, let
us do good to all people, and especially to those
who are of the household of the faith.

38
  • 1Jn 316 We know love by this, that He laid down
His life for us and we ought to lay down our
    lives for the brethren.
  • 1Jn 317 But whoever has the world's goods, and
sees his brother in need and closes his heart
against him, how does the love of God abide in
    him?

39
  • 2Co 96 Now this I say, he who sows sparingly
will also reap sparingly, and he who sows
    bountifully will also reap bountifully.
  • 2Co 97 Each one must do just as he has purposed
in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion,
for God loves a cheerful giver.

40
Paul on Missions
  • 2 Co 912 For the ministry of this service is
not only fully supplying the needs of the saints,
but is also overflowing through many
    thanksgivings to God.
  • 2Co 913 Because of the proof given by this
ministry, they will glorify God for your
obedience to your confession of the gospel of
Christ and for the liberality of your
contribution to them and to all,

41
Another text to consider
  • Jas 127 Pure and undefiled religion in the
sight of our God and Father is this to visit
orphans and widows in their distress, and to keep
    oneself unstained by the world.
  • Orphans, to be considered true orphans would have
to be young children with no parents. These
would be those who have not reached the age of
accountability and therefore are going to heaven
should the rapture occur or they pass away. We
    should help all true orphans.

42
What about widows?
  • 1Ti 53 Honor widows who are widows indeed
  • 1Ti 54 but if any widow has children or
grandchildren, they must first learn to practice
piety in regard to their own family and to make
some return to their parents for this is
acceptable in the sight of God.
  • 1Ti 55 Now she who is a widow indeed and who
has been left alone, has fixed her hope on God
and continues in entreaties and prayers night and
    day.

43
  • 1Ti 58 But if anyone does not provide for his
own, and especially for those of his household,
he has denied the faith and is worse than an
    unbeliever.
  • 1Ti 59 A widow is to be put on the list only if
she is not less than sixty years old, having been
    the wife of one man,
  • 1Ti 510 having a reputation for good works and
if she has brought up children, if she has shown
hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the
saints' feet, if she has assisted those in
distress, and if she has devoted herself to every
    good work.

44
  • 1Jn 316 We know love by this, that He laid down
His life for us and we ought to lay down our
    lives for the brethren.
  • 1Jn 317 But whoever has the world's goods, and
sees his brother in need and closes his heart
against him, how does the love of God abide in
    him?
  • 1Jn 318 Little children, let us not love with
word or with tongue, but in deed and truth.

45
  • What about when Jesus fed the multitudes in the
    wilderness?
  • Matt.1414
  • He didnt raise money and bring food to them
  • He went out to the wilderness, they followed, He
ministered, and then miraculously fed them.
  • This is not a pattern for missions

46
  • Missions is not westernizing the world.
  • Missions is not a humanitarian aide program
  • Missions is more important than that it is
saving people eternally, not just temporarily.
  • It is making disciples in every nation, tribe,
    and people group!

47
Back to Pauls Example
  • In fact, Paul collected offerings from those who
came to the Lord on his mission trips and took
the offering back to the church in Jerusalem!

48
  • 2Co 81 Now, brethren, we wish to make known to
you the grace of God which has been given in the
    churches of Macedonia,
  • 2Co 82 that in a great ordeal of affliction
their abundance of joy and their deep poverty
overflowed in the wealth of their liberality.
  • 2Co 83 For I testify that according to their
ability, and beyond their ability, they gave of
    their own accord,

49
  • 2Co 84 begging us with much urging for the
favor of participation in the support of the
    saints,
  • 2Co 85 and this, not as we had expected, but
they first gave themselves to the Lord and to us
    by the will of God.

50
Summary on Missions
  • Spiritual needs more important than physical
    needs
  • We need to demonstrate Gods love to those we
meet in our daily routine (our neighbors)
  • We need to be wise stewards of Gods money
    asses legitimate needs with con-games.

51
  • Mar 833 But turning around and seeing His
disciples, He rebuked Peter and said, "Get
behind Me, Satan for you are not setting your
mind on God's interests, but man's. 34 And He
summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said
to them, "If anyone wishes to come after Me, he
must deny himself, and take up his cross and
follow Me. 35 "For whoever wishes to save his
life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for
My sake and the gospel's will save it. 36 "For
what does it profit a man to gain the whole
    world, and forfeit his soul?

52
  • Mar 837 "For what will a man give in exchange
    for his soul?
  • Mar 838 "For whoever is ashamed of Me and My
words in this adulterous and sinful generation,
the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when
He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy
    angels."

53
  • Yes, if we have the means we should help those in
    need.
  • But this is not the purpose of missions.
  • Missions is all about spreading the Gospel of
Jesus Christ and making disciples in all nations!
  • We need to be wise stewards of Gods money!

54
Missions Giving
  • Act 434 For there was not a needy person among
them, for all who were owners of land or houses
would sell them and bring the proceeds of the
    sales
  • Act 435 and lay them at the apostles' feet, and
they would be distributed to each as any had
    need.

55
  • As a Church, we have a benevolence policy that is
designed to assist us in being wise stewards of
    Gods money.
  • Giving is good, sharing your faith is required!

56
  • We need to be about our Fathers business!
  • Lets start sharing!

57
  • Luk 102 And He was saying to them, "The harvest
is plentiful, but the laborers are few therefore
beseech the Lord of the harvest to send out
    laborers into His harvest.
  • Luk 103 "Go behold, I send you out as lambs in
    the midst of wolves.

58
  • Biblical missions is going out, proclaiming the
good news making disciples. It is who we are!
  • Its being more concerned about the losts
spiritual needs than their physical comfort. (or
    yours, for that matter!)
  • Do you have a co-worker, friend or neighbor you
    have never shared with?

59
  • My Friend
  •  My friend, I stand in judgment now,
  • And feel that you are to blame somehow.
  • On earth I walked with you day by day,
  • And never did you point the way.
  •
  • You knew the Lord in truth and glory,
  • But never did you tell the story.
  • My knowledge then was very dim,
  • You could have led me safe to Him.
  •
  • Though we lived together here on earth,
  • You never told me of the second birth.
  • And now I stand this day condemned,
  • Because you failed to mention Him.

60
  • You taught me many things, thats true,
  • I called you friend, and trusted you.
  • But I learn now that its too late,
  • And you could have kept me from this fate.
  •
  • We walked by day and talked by night,
  • And yet you showed me not the light.
  • You let me live, and love, and die,
  • You knew Id never live on high.
  •
  • Yes, I called you friend in life,
  • And trusted you through joy and strife.
  • And yet, on coming to this dreadful end,
  • I cannot now call you My Friend.

61
Go out and Share Jesus!!
  • Now, some of you are thinking
  • Thats not my gift!-Gifts of the Spirit all of
them are for going out and sharing the Gospel
    Acts 18
  • I pay the pastor and missionaries to do
    that!-Thats wonderful however, you should
know you dont pay them to do that, you pay them
    to

62
Offices of Leaders
  • Eph 411 And He gave some as apostles, and some
as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as
    pastors and teachers,
  • Eph 412 for the equipping of the saints for the
work of ministry, to the building up of the body
    of Christ
  • Apostle sent one missionary!
  • evangelist bringer of good tidings
  • Yet both offices are to equip the saints!

63
  • Luk 128 "And I say to you, everyone who
confesses Me before men, the Son of Man will
confess him also before the angels of God
  • Luk 129 but he who denies Me before men will be
denied before the angels of God.

64
Confess
  • profess
  • a) to declare openly, speak out freely

65
  • Rom 1014 How then will they call on Him in whom
they have not believed? How will they believe in
Him whom they have not heard? And how will they
    hear without a preacher?
  • Rom 1015 How will they preach unless they are
sent? Just as it is written, "HOW BEAUTIFUL ARE
THE FEET OF THOSE WHO BRING GOOD NEWS OF GOOD
    THINGS!"
  • preacher herald in Greek

66
Becoming Salt and Light
  • Matt. 513If youre not being salt and light,
what does Gods Word say your good for?

67
(No Transcript)
68
We need to please God and not worry about mens
opinions!
  • Gal 19 As we have said before, so now I say
again If anyone is preaching to you a gospel
contrary to the one you received, let him be
    accursed.
  • Gal 110 For am I now seeking the approval of
man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If
I were still trying to please man, I would not be
    a servant of Christ.
  • Gal 111 For I would have you know, brothers,
that the gospel that was preached by me is not
    man's gospel.

69
How would you rate yourself?
  • On fire for God being salt and light sharing
    the Gospel
  • Not on fire for God just getting by just
concerned about getting to heaven and not going
    to hell
  • Cold you believe in God but your lamp is not
lit or hidden hiding the fact that you are a
    Christian

70
  • If youre on fire re kindle the flame this
    morning!
  • If youre just getting by, neither hot nor cold
get your lamp out from under the bushel!Rev 315
'I know your deeds, that you are neither cold
nor hot I wish that you were cold or hot. 16
'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor
cold, I will spit you out of My mouth.
  • If youre lamp is out, you need to light it this
    morning!

71
  • Mat 514 "You are the light of the world. A city
set on a hill cannot be hidden
  • We need to be inviting people to church and
    sharing the Gospel with them!

72
  • The first century church did just that!
  • And they were faced with being killed for their
faith, but they kept on sharing!
  • And you are too scared to share Jesus with those
in your realm of influence because you might
    offend them????????????

73
Barriers To First Century Evangelism
  • They were killed for their faith!
  • They were rejected by their friends and family
  • They couldnt conduct business many cities
  • They were persecuted
  • Yet

74
Against the odds, they shared
  • Jesus is the Way!
  • Good fruit (Gal. 522-23)
  • Godly living (Rom. 619-22 Eph. 58-10 Phil.
    19-11 Heb. 1211 Jas. 317-18)
  • Spiritual development (2 Pet. 15-11)
  • Good works (Col. 19-11)
  • The simple Gospel -1Co 22 For I determined to
know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and
