BSK3100 Advanced Underwater Basket Weaving
  • Dr. Adam WestProfessor of Basketology

2
Introduction
  • My project for the Summer Institute is revitalize
my Underwater Basket Weaving course in the
Textiles department, to move from straight
lecture, and reformat it so that I can better
engage my students in large classes.  The
Textiles program is highly sought after and by
reconfiguring the elements of my to use
innovative technology such as WebCT and
PowerPoint, etc., as well as more effective uses
of course management techniques, I expect student
learning will improve.  Blah, blah, blah.

3
Introduction
  • I plan to make changes in my Introduction to
Marshmallow Peeps Production class by learning
how to provide a more interactive (digestible)
learning environment for my students, via
collaboration tools, group projects, etc.  My
classes are limited to a size of not more than 30
students, and I want to explore how to get my
students to production software, use electronic
resources and the industrial strategies.  Blah,
    blah, blah.

4
Introduction
  • The Search for Atlantis department has been a bit
lost for some time, and our team plans to rethink
how we can train more students in usable
techniques for discovering remnants of the
civilization.  We want to consider the structure
of the program, the courses and the logical
outcomes of courses in the discipline and
redesign the process through which students go,
so that graduates from our program will have
practical outcomes and skills.  Blah, blah, blah.
  • Take a look at UCFs Academic Calender.

The Setting
  • The Textiles Program is highly valued in this
area of Central Florida, since reeds grow so
plentifully.  Students need to learn how to ..
The classrooms are becoming more technologically
advanced, which offers a much more flexible
environment in which to teach the principles of
Underwater Basket Weaving.  Students expect to be
trained so that they can work as basket weavers
as soon as they graduate.  This necessitates
revision of my classes to ..Blah, blah, blah
  • The market for Marshmallow Peeps is growing by
leaps and bounds, but the production technology
has lagged behind.  Even so, it has been a
challenge to involve students in meaningful,
in-class dialogue with each other.  They often
resist being asked to work in teams and want
easier ways to be evaluated by me, the
instructor.  Ive tried to get them to.  I have
    difficulty grading and evaluating qualitative
    projects.Blah, blah, blah

6
The Setting
  •  The professional society of Atlantans has
developed new accreditation standards, which has
necessitated a totally reevaluation of our
programs course offerings.  If not the major of
Search for Atlantis will become irrelevant to
higher education.  We want to consider the wide
range of pedagogical approaches to college
majors, the educational experiences of students,
while considering the job market for future
Atlantans.  What goals should higher education
    programs consider?  What educational experiences
should graduate have to equip them to
independently begin the search?  X colleagues
form Search for Atlantis will discuss.. in
order to develop a logical plan for students to
within the two-year upper level curriculum.
    Blah, blah, blah

Learning Problems and Goals
  • Problems
  • Students are "running away" from basket weaving
because it is not seen in a relevant context.
  • Students have a fear of basket weaving.
  • Academic community has overlooked basket weaving
    issues for too long.
  • Students do not see technology of basket weaving
    as an educational tool.

8
Learning Problems and Goals
  • Goals
  • Provide a variety of opportunities to learn
  • Teach fundamental concepts and skills by using
    real-world problems
  • Stimulate student interest by making basket
weaving relevant to the students' lives
  • Increase basket weaving literacy
  • Use diverse teaching strategies
  • Offer a technology-dependent curriculum.  Blah,
    blah, blah

Creating the Learning Environment
Instead of straight lectures on basket weaving, I
will develop , incorporate , Blah, blah, blah
  • case studies
  • group underwater work
  • out of class assignments
  • PowerPoint presentations

Outcomes - Projected
  • Measurable outcomes
  • Grades should increase by 5 because
  • Student complaints will decrease by 10 because
  • Because I changed ., more of my students will be
prepared for a professional job with a major
    basket weaving company.
  • Blah, blah, blah . . .

Outcomes - Actual
