Title: Lighting Education

1
Lighting Education
  • Lights, Camera, Action

2
Who can I thank For lights?
  • Thomas Edison, Joseph Swan, Hiram Maxim, Humphrey
Davy, James Joule, George Westinghouse, Charles
Brush, and William Coolidge all of these men in
some way or another worked on parts or discovered
    formulas for the light bulb.
  • Thomas Alva Edison (February 11, 1847- October
18, 1931)is given credit for the invention of the
first electric light bulb which he invented in
    1879.

3
What should I take under consideration when
designing lights for a show?
  • A)  Design Technique and Application- Color,
    light sources, brightness relationships,
introduction  to and evaluation of typical
    lighting applications. Drafting and
    visualization.
  • B)  Human Responses to Light-Sight and behavior
  • C)  Electrical Control and Distribution
  • D)  Optical Control and Distribution
  • E)  Lighting Equipment Types and Application
  • F)  Specialized Topics- Conservation of energy,
materials, safety codes and regulations, history,
    photographic and photoelectric reproduction
    technology

Best Learning device
  • Hands on experience
  • successful lighting design ultimately depends on
the designer understanding his equipment, not
just in theory but in practice.
  • A good exercise
  • Tests these lighting tools 6 ellipsoidal
    reflector, 6" fresnel, 24" Flood, and Par64MFL
  • Each fixture should be used (one at a time) to
light a small scene, against a black backdrop and
floor and then against a white backdrop and
floor. The designer will usually be quite
surprised at how just changing the scenery from
black to white (light to dark), can drastically
'change the lighting'. This provides a great
    lesson regarding reflection, absorption,
    intensity, color, moods, etc.

5
How Else Can I learn??
  • 1.Attend a show and pay attention to the
    different techniques being used.
  • 2.Pay attention in class
  • 3.Do some research on the Internet
  • 4.Dont be afraid to ask question Your teacher
    can help you

6
What you need to know about lighting Designers.
  • Lighting Designers are important member of the
    design or production team.
  • lighting designers must understand limitations
and fully collaborates with the director and
other designers during all stages of design so it
might me necessary to fix the problems with light.

7
What can make lighting design difficult
  • Lighting Design can be difficult because many
different people must interpret somethin you
    already understand
  • Lighting is open of interpretation and not every
one think the same as you do.
