Title: Hazardous Waste

1
Hazardous Waste
  • Oregon State University
  • Environmental Health and Safety

2
Hazardous Defined
  • Flammable (flash point lt140o F)
  • Corrosive (pH lt2 or pH gt12)
  • Reactive (oxidizers, water reactive)
  • Toxic

3
Hazardous Waste Defined
  • Used or spent chemicals from a process or
    experiment
  • Old or unwanted chemicals
  • Materials from a spill clean-up

4
Containers
  • Appropriate size type
  • Good condition NON-LEAKING
  • Closed with non leaking tight fitting lids that
are not cracked, broken or chemically damaged
  • Compatible with contained waste

5
Labeling
  • Containers must be labeled prior to addition of
    waste
  • The label must be filled out completely
  • The label must include constituent and
    concentration by
  • Improperly labeled waste will not be removed
  • Original manufacturer labels are acceptable if no
    other material has been added

6
OSU EHS Hazardous Waste Label
  • Available from EHS 7-4552 on EHS web site

7
Point of Generation
  • Waste must be stored at or near the point of
    generation
  • Filled containers must stay in original room
  • When waste is not being added to the container,
    the container must be closed
  • Evaporation of waste not permitted

8
Drain Disposal
  • Drain disposal of hazardous waste is strictly
    forbidden
  • Corvallis drain disposal regulations
  • NO liquids gt 150o F
  • NO flam. liquids with explosive potential
  • NO fat, oil, grease gt 100 ppm
  • pH values 6 to 9

9
Where Does the Waste Go?
  • Landfill
  • Incinerator
  • Chemical Reactor
  • Nuclear Reactor
  • Fuel
  • Retort

10
Special Waste
  • Radioactive (Radiation Safety 7-2227)
  • Biological (Bio Safety 7-2276)
  • E Sharps
  • ? Medical waste
  • ? Infectious substances
  • ? Stocks and Solutions
  • Aerosol Cans
  • Batteries
  • Broken Glass

11
Waste Categories
  • Lab pack
  • Non-halogenated
  • Halogen solvent
  • Aqueous liquid
  • Organic solid
  • Inorganic solid
  • Acid inorganic
  • Organic corrosive
  • Inorganic alkali
  • Hg debris
  • Hg compounds
  • Batteries (nicad, alkaline, lithium)
  • High hazard
  • Oil paint
  • Unknown

12
How Much Does It Cost OSU (per pound)?
  • 0.56 Landfill
  • 0.37 0.46 Fuel
  • 0.87 1.05 Chemical Reactor
  • 2.16 Incinerator
  • 3.38 Retort

13
How Much does it cost YOU?
  • Full cost
  • Partially subsidized
  • Nothing

14
How Much does it cost YOU?
  • Nothing

15
When Should you Get Rid of Waste
  • Anytime
  • When done generating that waste
  • Would you trust this chemical for a critical
    experiment?
