To analyse the differences between low birth
weight (LBW) and preterm birth (PB) according to
the mothers nationality in newborns in Spain

4Methods
- Cross sectional study.
- Data were provided from the National Statistical
Bulletin of Birth of 1,878,618 newborns in the
period 2001-2005. - Exposure variable Mother nationality
Spanish-Immigrant and in categories Spain,
Southern Europe, rest of Western countries (rest
of countries in Western Europe, United States and
Canada), Eastern Europe, North Africa,
Sub-Saharan Africa, Central America and,
Caribbean, South America, Asia and Oceania. - Outcomes LBW (borns lt2,500 gr with
lt37gestational weeks) and PB (lt37 gestational
weeks). - Rest of variables Sex of newborn, maternal age,
number of live born children, marital status,
birth number, normality of birth, newborn sex - Descriptive analysis, prevalence of LBW and PB
and crude and adjusted OR by logistic regression

8Conclusions
- In general, newborns of Immigrant mothers present
better outcomes that Spanish ones. - There exist some differences between countries
associated to particular characteristics among
immigrant mothers and social determinants.
