Unplanned Pregnancy In West Virginia
  • 42 of WV Women reported their pregnancy was
    unintended. (pregnancy wanted later or not at
    all)
  • Most unintended pregnancies were reported by
    single women (over 60).
  • Over 40 of unintended pregnancies are to women
    20-29 years of age.
  • Over 30 of unintended pregnancies were reported
    by WV married women.

  • Declined from 1997 through 2005, then increased
    in 2006 and 2007
  • Increase is accounted for in the 18-19 age group
  • WV teen birth rate is higher than national
    average (2006)
  • 16.5 of WV high school students had had 4 or
    more sexual partners (higher than national
    average 14.9 in 2007)

    healthy maternal behavior such as preconception
    care and optimum child spacing
  • Unplanned pregnancy lies behind the majority of
    abortions
  • Children born as the result of unplanned
    pregnancy are at greater risk of
  • Low birthweight
  • Preterm birth
  • Lower cognitive scores on a range of measures
  • Having mothers and fathers who suffer from
    depression and relationship conflict
