  • Course Catalog will be online at

  • Select GOHS catalog
  • Courses are listed by department
  • (i.e., World Languages, Sciences, Math,
    Business or Family Consumer).
  • Course offerings are dependent upon student
    requests.

Graduation RequirementsA minimum of 220 Semester
credits in the following subject areas are
required for graduation from Great Oak
  • English 40 credits
  • Social Science 35 credits (including Geography)
  • Science 20 credits
  • Mathematics 30 credits (including Algebra I)
  • Physical Ed. 20 credits
  • Fine Arts 10 credits
  • Health 5 credits
  • Electives 60 credits
  • Ten Hours of Community Service (non profit and no
    pay).
  • Pass the Computer/Information Literacy
    Proficiency requirement.
  • Pass the High School Exit Exam-Math Language
    Arts

UC/CSU A-G High School Course Requirements
  • These courses represent the minimum academic
    standards to be eligible for admission in the
    UC/CSU systems. All courses must be completed
    with a C or better. There are additional
    testing, grade point average, and application
    requirements as well.
  • A. History and Social Science Including 1 year
    of U.S. History, World History, Government and
    Geography.
  • B. English 4 years of college preparatory
    English Composition and Literature (take one each
    year).
  • C. Math 3 years required (4 years recommended),
    including Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra 2, or
    higher mathematics.
  • D. Laboratory Science 2 years required (3 years
    recommended). Two years must include one year in
    biology and one year in either chemistry or
    physics.
  • E. Language (other than English) 2 years
    required (3 years recommended) of the same
    language (American Sign Language counts, yet the
    ROP ASL class at GOHS is still waiting on course
    approval by UC).
  • F. Visual and Performing Arts 1 year of dance,
    drama, music, or visual art.
  • G. College Preparatory Elective 1 year or more
    of any of the subjects listed above.

Advanced Placement Program
  • What is the Advanced Placement (AP) Program?
  • It is college-level courses and exams for
    secondary school students.
  • What is an AP course like?
  • It is a special college-level learning experience
    that most often takes a full academic year.
  • The advantages of taking AP courses
  • Exemption by your college or university from
    beginning courses and permission to take higher
    level courses in certain fields.
  • Academic credit awarded for exams taken.
  • Tuition saving up to a year of credit may be
    given for three or more qualifying AP grades.
  • Time to explore undergraduate subject areas that
    you wouldnt otherwise be able to study.
  • Eligibility for honors and other special programs
    open to students who have received AP recognition.

PRE-IB COURSES
  • The IB program is a rigorous pre-university
    course of studies offered to 11th and 12th grade
    students. IB students will be required to
    participate in higher level coursework across the
    curriculum.
  • Pre-IB courses are offered in English and Global
    Science for 9th Grade
  • Pre-IB is recommended for students considering AP
    courses.
  • Pre-IB Students will be required to perform
    additional service projects (i.e., Science
    Olympiad).
  • Pre-IB students MUST be registered for a foreign
    language (ASL is not approved)

AVIDAdvancement Via Individual Determination
  • What is AVID?
  • An elective course to be taken all four years,
    geared towards increasing student enrollment in 4
    year universities.
  • AVID teaches note taking, test taking
    organization skills. We educate students on the
    requirements to attend college, prepare students
    for the SATs, and assist with filling out college
    applications and scholarships. We also hire
    trained tutors to assist students with
    challenging course work take field trips to
    local colleges.
  • Who is eligible?
  • The ideal AVID student has a 2.0-3.8 GPA, is
    motivated, dedicated to attending a 4 year
    college upon GOHS graduation, and is committed to
    a rigorous, college-bound schedule all four
    years. First generation college students are
    highly encouraged to apply!

    application process, get letters of
    recommendation from teachers, and schedule an
    interview.

  • Get involved join/start a club or sport
  • Ask questions, seek help when you need it
  • Check grades weekly Wednesday Progress Report
    and/or Grades On-line
  • 2 semesters with 6 and 12 week progress reports
    end of semester grades (January and June) go on
    transcript
  • Learn organization and study skills early use
    student planner, binder, tutoring options, and
    daily study times
  • Be familiar with attendance and tardy policies
  • Get to know staff at GOHS

  • Encourage club/sport involvement
  • Be prepared for I dont have any homework. Help
    them develop structured study/practice times
    throughout the week. Assessments count for the
    majority of final grade.
  • Ask your student to see all syllabi at beginning
    of the year
  • Familiarize yourself with various school websites
    and give your e-mail address to get news and info
    from GOHS
  • Help them learn to keep track of grades with Wed.
    Progress Report and Grades On-line
  • Email is generally the fastest and preferred
    method of communication
  • Please remember to call ahead for appointment to
    meet with teacher or staff member. Classes arent
    interrupted and appointments are usually needed
    due to the number of students that we serve.
