What does it mean to us?
  • Caregivers will have a little more income to
    better care for their children.

DCS Experience
  • DCS works with with highly impoverished
    communities in the informal settlements.
  • High unemployment rate in the area.
  • More and more people are disclosing their HIV
    status but often at a very later stage.
  • More children are taking care of terminally ill
    parents.
  • Grannies are often left to care for children
    aftre their parents die.

Challenges
  • Caregivers are left with children who cannot
    access grants due to lack of documents.
  • They need financial relief and we do not offer
    any material benefits.
  • Younger caregivers are not interested in food
    gardens as they find them too labourious.
  • Grannies are too old to participate in
    agricultural projects.

DCS Strategy
  • Income generating activities for all Caregiver
    and Children Support Groups.
  • Children take part in their school garden
    projects.
  • Supporting CBOs involved in Income Generating
    Projects for the betterment of childrens lives

Impact on Children
  • Children involved in school gardens can take a
    veggie home to share with the family.
  • Caregivers in IGAs have reported an improvement
    in their income levels.
  • Childrens needs can be provided for though in a
    limited way.
  • Formation of saving schemes with profits divided
    every six months.

  • Formation of ccs.
  • Getting training from DTI to form co-operatives.
  • Getting loans/grants to further their derams.
