Hype Email to President Likins
  • President Likins,
  • I would like to make you aware of a program, in
which Residence Life's recycling program has
matured to a stage of participation beyond the
campus level. Residence Life Recycling is
stepping forward to participate in a national
recycling competition between other colleges and
    universities throughout the United States.
Recycle Mania is a friendly competition to see
who can collect the largest amount of recyclables
from residence halls, on-campus apartments and
dining halls in 10 weeks. Measurements are
reported weekly on a pounds recycled per
resident. We will be representing the residence
halls and will provide residents with a fun,
pro-active activity in waste-reduction. Our main
goal by participating in this event is to
increase student awareness in campus recycling.
  • The program began in 2001 at Ohio University as
an attempt to boost recycling and diversion.
Despite their recycling successes at OU and some
of the other top recycling universities in the
nation, they discovered that certain on-campus
facilities tend to produce most of the campus
waste. In particular, their residence halls and
dining halls were the largest producers of campus
waste - from 30 to 70 of campus trash. Waste
audits they conducted suggested that up to half
of all residence hall trash was recyclable.
    Thus, Recycle Mania was born!
  • The overall goals are to
  • Have a fair and friendly recycling competition
  • Increase recycling participation by (on-campus)
    students and staff
  • Heighten awareness of schools' waste management
    and recycling program
  • Expand economic opportunities while addressing
environmental issues in a positive way
  • Lower waste generated on-campus by reducing,
    reusing and recycling
  • Organize this event successfully so it can be
repeated and possibly expanded to other campuses
    in the future
  • As you travel about campus next week you will
begin to see banners announcing "Recycle Mania is
Here" over the entrances to ten of our twenty
residence halls. We will officially begin on
February 2nd, with the competition ending on
April 9th. We hope our campus newspaper will
find this a news worthy event and follow the
competition over the ten week period keeping the
campus aware of our efforts. One of the criteria
for this event is all universities must publish
the winner of the competition in their school
newspaper. Whether the UA wins or another
university we all see ourselves as winners...

Hype Email to Wildcat
  • As you travel about campus next week you will
begin to see banners announcing "Recycle Mania is
Here" over the entrances to ten of our twenty
residence halls. We will officially begin on
February 2nd, with the competition ending on
April 9th. We hope the Arizona Daily Wildcat
will find this a news worthy event and will
periodically follow the competition over the ten
week period keeping the campus aware of our
    efforts.
  • To make this event even more interesting our
recycling chairs are making this a hall to hall
competition to see which hall can recycle the
most material during this timeframe. You may want
to interview some of our chairs to ask them what
strategies they are using in their hall to get
the resident to recycle. There will be a prize
for the winning hall. We will be reporting weekly
totals from our collections - maybe you could
even do a campus survey asking staff and students
which hall they think will win or interview
residents on what they think of the competition -
    good or bad.
  • Whether we come out number one or not, we are
excited because this will be the first time we
will be able to do a measurement against other
colleges and universities to see how well we are
doing on a national level. I hope you will
consider publishing information about this event
in an effort to further promote recycling not
only in the residence hall but throughout the
    campus.

Hype- Blurb in Wildcat
  • The Bomb Recycle Mania! OK, it's not as
exciting as it sounds, but Residence Life should
be applauded for keeping this tradition going.
Whether you're an environmentalist or not,
recycling is easy and just plain common sense.

Hype Staff Emails
  • Greeting Recyclemanians,
  • There was a nice twist in Recycle Mania this week
with ASU's totals for the week dropping to .96
pounds per residents from their last week total
of 2.4 pounds per residents so it ain't over yet!
Our totals jumped from last weeks .19 pounds per
residents to .58 pounds per residents - this was
a great increase and I am very happy to see those
figures go up - Great Job Everyone! ASU still
leads the UA but with the continued enthusiasm
our chairs and residents are showing we still
have a fighting chance to surpass those ASU folks
weights. For more information just go to the
    website at www.life.arizona.edu/'recycle
  • Several HDs have referred conduct cases for
community service hours our way and that is a big
help for our Saturday weigh-ins. Keep them
coming and a big, big thanks for supporting
    recycling and Recycle Mania.
