Databases use Boolean logic to locate only those
items that match your search.

  • Use AND to narrow a search by retrieving articles
    that contain both words.

  • Use OR to broaden a search by retrieving articles
    that contain either one of the search terms.

OR is also used to find synonyms.

NOT
  • Use NOT to narrow a search by retrieving articles
    that include the first search term, but not the
    second.

Truncation
  • Truncation, also called stemming, is the use of a
    designated symbol to retrieve variations of that
    word. It accounts for various word endings and
    spellings.

  • educat will retrieve educate, education,
    educator,
  • educators, educational
  • neuro! neuroscience, neurology, neurological
  • Truncation symbols vary by database. Popular ones
    include , !, ?, or . Look at Database Help or
    Search Tips to determine whether the database
    supports truncation as well as which symbol to
    use.

Wildcards and Nesting
  • Use a wildcard to replace one letter of a word in
    order to search for variations of that word.
  • womn searches for woman and women
  • Use nesting to put search words into sets.
  • (elderly OR aged) AND abuse

Stop Words
  • Databases do not recognize commonly used words
  • the, at, of, a, an, be, and, or
  • When searching databases, leave out stop words
    and search using only keywords.
