Persuasive Essay English 12
The pen is mightier than the sword because it can
effect through the power of words what might and
strength cannot .
2
Persuade withMonroes Motivated Sequence
  • I.  ATTENTION STEP Get the attention or your
audience.  This can be done with a detailed
story, shocking example, or dramatic statistic,
etc.  This is part or your introduction (in
addition to stating your thesis and telling your
audience why the topic is of concern to them).
  • II. NEED STEP Show the problem exists, that it
is a significant problem, and that it won't go
away by itself.  Document your statements with
    statistics, examples, etc.
  • III. SATISFACTION STEP Offer solutions for the
problem you have shown exists in the Need Step.
These are solutions that the government or
society as a whole can implement.  You must
    satisfy the need.
  • IV. VISUALIZATION STEP Tell us what will happen
if we don't do something about the problem.  Be
    graphic.
  • V.  ACTION STEP Offer alternatives to your
audience that they can do personally to help
solve the problem you have shown exists.  Again,
be very specific and very realistic.
  • VI. CONCLUSION Motivate us to get out and do
something!  Wrap up loose ends by giving a review
of points and restating your thesis, and then
conclude the paper, perhaps with a quote or
    anecdote.

3
Suggested pattern for your essay
Introduction/Attention
Pattern A can be a typical 5-6 paragraph essay or
a much longer persuasive tool. The thesis
statement will read like this Without the
help of concerned Vestavia Hills High School
activists, the victims of the Asian Tsunami will
face ongoing exposure to disease, poverty, and
lack of shelter.
Need Step
Satisfaction Step
Visualization Step
Action/Conclusion(1-2 paragraphs)
4
Understand what this essay is requiring you to do.
  • First, decide how you want to organize your
    essay.
  • Plan to appeal to both the logical reasoning and
    the emotions of your audience.
  • Find 1-2 graphics (pictures/charts) that will
help your essay be more persuasive.
  • Your job is to convince the reader to take a
    specific action.

5
Prepare the prewriting for the essay.
  • The persuasive essay will require three forms of
    prewriting
  • A bubble cluster or spider pre-write using
    Monroes Motivated Sequence
  • A phrase outline with copies of your graphics
  • A rough draft

6
Keep these things in mind as you write the rough
draft
  • Make effective use of your planned graphics. What
is more effective small integrated graphics or
ones at the beginning or end of the paper? Large
    or small ones?
  • Carefully proofread the essay. Be especially
    careful about comma rules.
