  • First sailed when he was 14
  • His original plans trying to reach India by
    sailing west were rejected by John II
  • Ferdinand and Isabella financed his trip
  • Made 4 trips to the Americas

Vasco da Gama
  • Born in 1468 and died in 1524
  • He was given the lordship of two towns, named
    the Commander in chief of the navy, and given a
    yearly allowance by King Manuel I for
    volunteering to take the trip to India

The Trip to the East
  • The voyage departed from Lisbon in 1497, sailed
    past the Canary Islands, made a large detour and
    finally sailed around the Cape of Good Hope on
    Nov. 22, 1497.
  • The fleet explored Eastern Africa and arrived in
    India on May 22, 1498.

  • Killed in the Phillipines while participating in
    tribal warfare with a local king he had
    befriended

Magellans Expedition
  • He obtained 5 ships named Trinidad, Concepcion,
    San Antonio, Victoria, and Santiago
  • He began his trip with 270 men
  • 3 of the captains plotted to kill Magellan
  • Mutinies led by the captains were put down
  • The captains were either jailed or marooned on
    deserted islands

Tierra del Fuego
  • While sailing through the Strait of Magellan
    (Strait of All Saints) the crew saw countless
    fires from distant Indian camps and called the
    land Tierra del Fuego meaning land of fire
