System Admin SIG
  • If you are interested, sign up out by the
registration desk, so when we have more
    year-round activity.

4
Topics
  • This is an open forum to discuss system admin
    issues
  • Assuming we have one, please use the mike so all
can hear your questions and/or answers
  • I will post notes a couple weeks after the
    conference as the presentation.

5
Question
  • If Siemens PLM Software were to support
StarOffice or OpenOffice for the spreadsheet used
in NX, how many of you would be interested?

6
Things were doing at Moog
  • FlexNet Manager
  • As people were interested, I (Ken) will put
together some kind of webinar to show how we
    use it at Moog.
  • HP Blades WAN / Shunra
  • If you will be using on a WAN, and your users
live die with their spaceball, TEST Ive
found spaceballs to be almost useless on a
typical WAN link (they work fine on a Gb LAN)

7
Random topics
  • If HP DesignJets (and ONLY DesignJets) have
REALLY slow performance issue (I think this was
NX5 upgrade from NX3), there is a patch available
    from Siemens PLM
  • Why cant we run UGS_Update.bat (MR/MP install)
    using a UNC?
  • It has to be local, so must map a drive or pass
    around a CD
  • Update one system and just copy changed files
    yourself to all other systems

8
Random topics (2)
  • TC and NX
  • Some configuration files can be put in TC. Some
have to be at the OS level. It would be better
to be able to keep almost all in TC (e.g. NX5
or 6 finally supports storing patterns in TC).
  • Note personally, I think the ugii_env.dat (and
possibly a couple other files) may HAVE to stay
    outside TC).
  • Exporting JT on save
  • Rendering in TcEng GUI really slow (panel at
    right)
  • Can it be improved?

9
Random topics (3)
  • Can we get better way than runninga REG file to
add a tab to the resource bar?
  • Should we have a System Admin CIP
  • Yes
  • I (Ken) wont do unless I get sufficient Ers to
    make up a good ballot
  • One ER I have already is to modify the MR/MP
install to allow backing out an MR/MP.
  • I (Ken) will work with PLMworld Siemens to see
    what we can do.

10
Random topics (4)
  • Hardware 64 bit
  • Is there really a reason to go to 64 bit?
  • If you are having memory issues then YES
  • When buying hardware, what order should we
    optimized CPU/Graphics/Memory
  • Andy Plescia RAM, then Graphics, then CPU
  • Best to test (if you are buying a bunch of
syetems, you may be able to get loaners, and try
    different hardware configurations).
  • Note Macros have a time stamp option for timing
tests. Also see BBS posts for journals for
    performance testing

11
Random topics (5)
  • Does HP still offer tuning framework? YES
  • Does graphics tuning in NX help?
  • Andy Plescia - The evidence is not conclusive
it may or may not help
  • Is there a plan to have all settings in one
    place?
  • Network ENV editable like customer defaults?
  • Note in custom ENV file you only need to define
the ENVs you change, then include the default
    one
  • Seems it could still be easier.

12
Random topics(6)
  • Can we put a solid view on a drawing, and output
a PDf of the drawing with the 3D solid embedded
in the PDF, viewable (zoom/pan/rotate-able) in
    3D PDF viewer?
  • Note you can export a JT and publish that to
    Acrobat 3D
  • Discussed plans for SIG pages on PLMworld web
site. Also efforts (e.g. conference calls) to
make the SIG more of a year round activity.

13
Random topics (7)
  • How can we get people out of bundles they should
    not be using?
  • Set OPT (flexLM) to prevent future usage, but
only really applies after they exit NX restart
(and depending how they do it, you may still need
to visit workstation to fix ENV)
  • Use LAN Tools to show what users have bundles,
then use peer pressure to get people to mend
    their ways
  • Use a .BAT to start NX, have use select bundle
from menu. This is particularly effective if you
are in TcEng, so they dont have to exit both NX
and TC to set/clear bundle ENV. See next page

14
Random topics (8)
  • Code to put in Start_Ugmanager.Bat to pick a
bundle. If you dont understand DOS, there is a
book Windows NT shell scripting by Tim Hill
(macmillan tech. Publ) that is really good in my
(Ken) opinion hopefully a newer edition has the
    2000/XP/?Vista? Updates/additions.
  • Code is in Notes page for this page
  • Adapt for your bundles as appropriate
