What is the Read/Write Web?

• Also called Web 2.0.
• Focuses more on Collaboration than Distribution.
• User-Generated Content.
• Bottom-up rather than Top-down publishing.
• Easy publishing, social interaction, community.
• Blogs and RSS
• Folksonomies/Tagging
• Podcasting/Video Blogging
• Wikis

Why Use Web 2.0?

• The Need for an Audience
• Everyone works harder, tries to do their best,
  if it counts, if it's 'for real.' A real
  audience, whether live or virtual, adds a sense
  of importance to what we are doing. Thus, one
  reason we want to provide students with actual
  audiences because it motivates them to do better
  work.
• Whether they are writing for a contest or a Web
  site, the superintendent or an unknown recipient
  in a small town in Alaska, students care more and
  thus take the time to write well.

Why Use Web 2.0?

• The Need for a Community of Learners
• The most significant moment in the course of
  intellectual development occurs when speech and
  practical activity, two previously completely
  independent lines of development, converge.
  Through practical activity a child constructs
  meaning on an intrapersonal level, while speech
  connects this meaning with the interpersonal
  world shared by the child and her/his culture.

  intrapersonal and then on the interpersonal
  level.

What are Blogs?

• A blog, is a frequently updated website
  consisting of time-stamped entries arranged so
  the most recent post appears first. Typically,
  weblogs are published and broadcasted via XML/RSS
  by individuals. The writing style is personal and
  informal. Blog entries may be commented on, and
  are networked by connected links between sites.
• What makes Blogging Blogging?
• Posting assignments (not blogging)?
• Journaling (not blogging, although similar in
  principle)?
• Posting links (not blogging)?
• Posting annotated links (close, but not quite)?
• Posting annotated links with basic analysis
  (simple blogging)?
• Reflective writing on practice and assignments,
  includes commenting (simple blogging) Where my
  classes are now.
• Links with deep analysis and synthesis,
  demonstrating a deeper understanding and a desire
  for audience (DING DING DING!)?
• Extended analysis and synthesis over a longer
  period of time, including multiple posts, links,
  and comments. (Complex, involved blogging)?

What is RSS?

• Really Simple Syndication
• A very easy method to keep track of blogs, wikis,
  and news online.
• Uses an aggregator to compile all the newest
  posts from your favorite blog or news source.
• Great way to organize and quickly scan student
  blogs, ed-blogs, podcasts, wiki changes, or news
  sites.

What are Folksonomies?

• A collaboratively generated, open-ended labeling
  (tagging) system.
• Taxonomies organize stuff according to content.
  Folksonomies (a taxonomy created by folks) use
  tags attached to web documents by users to
  organize stuff.
• Social bookmarking. Very similar to your browser
  favorites list... except shared and categorized
  for anyone to use.

Ok, really...What are Podcasts?

• Portmanteau of IPod and Broadcast. Basically a
  video or audio recording that is broadcast over
  the internet...like a blog.
• Syndicated with RSS.
• Can be any audio or video file format. Sites
  like YouTube.com, or even ITunes can be used to
  publish Podcasts.

What are Wikis?

• Hawaiian word Wiki Wiki means quick.
• Also a 'Backronym' for What I Know Is...
• Webpage that can be quickly edited, by anyone,
  through the front end, with minimal knowledge of
  web design.
• Collaborative by design, the idea is that
  multiple people can create a single piece of
  shared knowledge. After all, six million brains
  are better than one.
• Most well-known site is Wikipedia.org
