computer-security professionals. Keeping this
need in mind, the Special Interest Group for
Computer Security (SIG-CS) of the Data Processing
Management Association (DPMA) in November 1988
brought together several organizations interested
in this and in mid-1989, the International
Information Systems Security Certification
Consortium, commonly known as "(ISC)²" was
established.

Professional (CISSP) refers to an independent
information security certification offered by the
not-for-profit International Information Systems
Security Certification Consortium (ISC)². As per
the latest (ISC)² reports, 67,744 members in 134
countries hold the CISSP certification.

CISSP was the first information security
credential accredited by ANSI ISO/IEC Standard
170242003 accreditation in June 2004. Formally
approved by the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD)
in their Information Assurance Technical (IAT)
and Information Assurance Managerial (IAM)
categories, this certification has been accepted
as a standard for the U.S. National Security
Agency's ISSEP program.
