What is a Media File Format?

• Definition from the Web must be uploaded to the
  site before being used. Can be a graphic file,
  PDF file, movie file, audio file, Word file, etc.
  Can be used within a page or linked to from a
  page for downloading.
• Media formats are used to store audio and visual
  computer files.
• Digital media files can be transferred over the
  internet.

• Audio MP3, WAV, OGG
• Video MPG, MPEG, AVI, ASF, SWF
• Graphic JPG, GIF

What are Some Media File Formats?

• Music MP3, WAV
• Video MPG, MPEG, AVI, ASF, DVD

Formats

• .asf Advanced Systems Format. This is Windows
  Medias preferred format which streams both audio
  and video content.
• .wma Windows Media Audio. This is playback of
  audio sources only.
• .wmv, .wm Windows Media Video. Similar to
  advanced system format files.

• Musical Instrument Digital Interface (.mid,
  .midi, .rmi) - Allows communication between
  instruments, synthesizers and computers.
• Moving Picture Experts Group (.mp3, .mpeg, .m1v,
  ) Allows video progression rate of 1.5 million
  bits per second (bps), will fit on a DVD.
• RealAudio (.ra, .ram) Real Audio music file.
• Audio for Windows
• .wav CD Audio Track
• .cda. Files on CD media.

• Waveform (.wav) Wave Form Audio. Stores sounds
  as waveforms. Must be in this format to be
  burned.
• Windows Media Audio (.wma) popular format
  available on the web.
• Audio Interchange File Format (.aif, .aifc,
  .aiff) - Audio file format that can store high
  quality audio.
• Sun Microsystems and NeXT
• au UNIX-generated sound files
• .snd a sound file

• Audio Visual Interleave (.avi) Will play audio
  and visual at the same time.
• Motion Picture Experts Group (.mp4, .mp2). MPEG
  layer II is an audio-coding standard.
• QuickTime Content (.mov, qt.) Can create, edit,
  publish and view multimedia files.

• RealMedia / RealVideo (.rm, .rv) can edit,
  stream, capture, and create.
• Flash and Shockwave (.swf) can use for movies
  or interactive content
• Indeo Video Technology (ivf.) - encoded video
  files.
• Microsoft Digital Video Recording (.dvr-ms) For
  storing recorded tv content.

• Microsoft Word Document (.doc) word processing
  program, can be open by similar programs.
• ASCII (.txt) can be opened by any program.
• Hypertext Markup Language (.html) use for the
  internet.
• Rich Text Format (.rtf) MS Word can use.

• Bitmap (.bmp) graphics, can view and edit.
• Graphics Interchange Format (.gif) Comics and
  logos can be worked with in this program.
• Joint Photographic Experts Group (.jpeg)
  photographs.
• JPEG 2000 (.jp2) web images, security, etc.
• Multiple Image Network Graphics (.mng) animated
  version of PNG.

• Tagged Image Profile Format (.tiff) can be
  printed well, not the best use for web pages.

• Advanced Stream Redirector (.asx) Text files
  which include file stream and its presentation.
• Windows Media Audio Redirector (.wax) WM
  Metafiles that reference WM audio files.
• Windows Media Video Redirector (.wvx) WM
  Metafiles that reference WM video files.
• Windows Media Redirector (.wmx) WM Metafiles
  that reference WM audio or video files or both.
• Windows Media Player Playlist (.wpl) Creates
  playlists of songs.
