Early Years

• Born in Scotland July, 1747
• Apprenticed aboard the ship Friendship in 1759
• 1764 he was third mate on a slave ship

Accomplishments

• In 1777 he took Portsmouth and built the ship
  Ranger
• As a Naval Captain he visited New Hampshire twice
• He worried the British in a series of guerilla
  raids
• His famous Battle was Bon Homme Richard
• Captain of the ship America the largest war
  ship in 1778
• The first to be commissioned as lieutenant in the
  Continental Navy

Later Years

• He was a hero decorated by the King of France
• Offered a Military Commission by George
  Washington, but was in ill health so he didnt
  accept it
• Died July 18, 1792 at age 45

• Met Ambassador Ben Franklin in France
• The first to raise the Grand Union liberty flag
