1
I.A. Design Project
  • Alex Bryan
  • Riverview High School
  • Sarasota Hospital Database

2
The Problem Being Solved (G)
  • Lack of information about local hospitals
  • Will my insurance be accepted?
  • How much will it cost?

3
The Idea (H)
  • A database of information about local hospitals
  • Major Advantages
  • Searchable
  • Easily accessible
  • Accessible anywhere

4
Planning (I)
  • Microsoft Excel was going to be used to create
    the product
  • It was later decided to use OpenOffice.Org
  • Database
  • Free
  • Cross Platform

5
Planning (I)
  • Two Database managers, none of them used in the
    final product

6
Planning (I)
  • It was then decided to host the database on a 3rd
    party server
  • The database was (re) created and managed
    remotely with phpMyAdmin

7
Problems Collecting Data (I)
  • Most data was too difficult to collect
  • Varies too wildly
  • Cost of care contains too many variables
  • Length of visit
  • Severity of Condition
  • Highly unreliable

8
Problems Collecting Data (I)
  • The only reliable data that could have been
    collected was Insurances Accepted.

9
The Product (pre-alpha)
10
Disaster Strikes (_at_)
  • The 3rd party server software crashes
  • Entire database needs to be recreated and
    rehosted
  • This was February 27

11
Blank Screens are NOT good! (_at_)
12
Refinement of Product (J)
13
Problems (I)
  • With the new host, the database could only be
    accessed by me
  • New arrangement could not be configured in time
for the deadline to allow others to access it

14
Problems (I)
  • Testers were able to test the database using my
account, but required my authorization and
    password
  • A compromise was made
  • A simple table was created and hosted alongside
    the database
  • This allowed the data to be viewed and
    semi-searchable
  • But lacks the functionality of a full database

15
The Simple Table
16
Total Amount ofInsurances Accepted
17
Conclusions (K)
  • Although the final product was not as feature
rich as hoped, it successfully shared the
necessary information to accomplish the goal

18
Conclusions (K)
  • If provided with proper resources and access to
information, this product could have a serious
    impact on the community

19
Conclusions (K)
  • Positive Effects of Increased Public Awareness
    about Insurance
  • More people will go to the hospital when it is
    necessary
  • Hospitals will be pressured into accepting more
    insurances
  • Insurance companies will compete to be accepted
    at more hospitals

20
Conclusions (K)
  • Negative Effects of Increased Public Awareness
    about Insurance
  • If more people go to the hospital when needed,
    overcrowding could occur
  • Insurance companies and consumers may prioritize
acceptance of insurance over the quality of
    coverage.
