For any modern company, data security is of
paramount importance. Often overlooked, proper
backup procedures can make the difference between
bankruptcy and survival when an IT disaster
strikes. In todays environment digital data and
information is the life blood of most companies.
Emails, Accounts, Production Databases, Trading
and SAP systems as well as customer
correspondence and contact databases are used by
almost all companies.
The repercussions of loosing one or all of these
systems can mean disaster. Most companies rely
on tape backups, most are unaware that tape
backups are prone to failure.
More and more companies are turning to remote,
managed, offsite backups to protect their data,
giving peace of mind that when, and if, the worst
happens they will not only survive the disaster,
but their business will be back up and running
again within a matter of hours.

14 of companies that had any type of IT
security incident identified systems failure,
data corruption, or physical theft as their worst
incident. Three-quarters said the incident was
serious. Some (7) had significant permanent data
loss as a result of the incident. Manufacturing
companies had the most incidents.DTI ISBS

Arxcis software is installed either on an
existing server or workstation connected to the
network, or on its own dedicated server if the
data backup requirements are great. Arxcis
software has been developed over 18 years and is
used by some of the biggest companies in the U.K.
and across the globe. Arxcis is an extremely
robust and reliable enterprise level based
software solution that is capable of backing up
distributed and complex data across a local
network or WAN.
  • Hot backups of SQL
  • Hot backups of Exchange
  • System State
  • Windows 98/NT/2000/2003/XP
  • Unix / Linux
  • Lotus / Netware / Oracle
  • Bare metal backups with intuitive restore

Once installed and configured, Arxcis will at a
predetermined time, look for changes across your
selected data sets and send those changes using a
technique called delta blocking. This allows only
the changes to the data to be sent, allowing very
large amounts of data to be protected and backed
up in a short backup window (usually much less
than a tape backup). Any changes are sent using
existing internet connections, which can be
configured to use only the available bandwidth
and not conflict with any other internet or WAN
reliant applications. As with most companies data
today, confidentiality and security are of
paramount concern. With Arxcis none of your data
leaves your network in an un-encrypted state and
is only ever readable by you.

At the heart of Databarracks operations has
always been the need for resilience and
reliability. Databarracks storage systems have
been designed and modified, with years of
independent RD to become extremely reliable with
no data loss and 99.99 system uptime. We only
use the best hardware and have a in-depth
understanding of encryption and security. This is
why we use a combination of Unix for the storage
and front end firewalls, as well as the massive
scalability in terms of the clustering and load
balancing Windows advanced architecture allows
our Backup application servers.
Databarracks backup systems are kept in one of
the most secure data centres anywhere in the
world. Our data centre is a bunker designed to
protect command and control systems in the event
of a nuclear war.
The Bunker is situated on 18 acres of land and
surrounded by concertina wiring in Kent, England.
It is an impregnable fortress, sitting 30 metres
below ground. It has concrete walls three metres
thick, steel doors weighing over two tons that
protect the servers and digital storage units
within. Layered on top of this physical
inaccessibility is a 24-hour watch with guard
dogs, CCTV and a series of sophisticated access
controls that offer the ultimate in protection
from a myriad of attacks, including crackers,
terrorist attack, electro-magnetic pulse,
electronic eavesdropping, HERF weapons and solar
flares. The Bunker is designed to keep digital
data available to you at all times. There are
sufficient underground diesel tanks to keep the
plant running for a solid three months without
refuelling, and dual UPS systems capable of
running the entire server facility for forty
hours in the event of a power outage, to ensure
there is no interruption to service during
switchover.

solution to securing our data was to outsource
our company backups to Databarracks to ensure

Smythson is one of only eight companies to hold
four royal warrants and supplied invitations for
the wedding of the Prince of Wales to Lady Diana
Spencer. It also counts Giorgio Armani and the
actors Gwyneth Paltrow, Dustin Hoffman and Jack
Nicholson among its customers. The company, set
up in 1887 by Frank Smythson, started by
producing diaries, which had thin blue paper
rather than the conventional thick white pages.
Mr Smythson claimed that his early diaries were
inspired by the Nile Blue colour that had
entranced him on a visit to Egypt. Databarracks
implemented a comprehensive offsite backup
strategy for Smythson, which backs up their Bond
Street Head office as well as satellite offices
in New York and Swindon. Their nightly backup
includes SQL, Exchange, Sage and all the usual
office files. As well as this there are bare
metal backups of key servers including stock
control and provisioning application servers.
Who are Databarracks?Databarracks was founded in
Guernsey in 2001. Our directors come from a

financial institutions in the Channel Islands. As
demand increased from more diverse industries and
from companies around the globe, Databarracks
opened a London office at Waterloo in November
2003. Since our inception we have maintained an
exceptional client retention rate, we achieve
this not only through an excellent value
offering, but also by pro-active and extremely
prompt and effective support. Databarracks now
includes among its clients Financial Institutions

companies in the USA and the UK, Law Firms,
Private Military Companies and specialist
security firms as well as small and large

Arxcis Pricing 2005
With Arxcis you only pay for the amount of
compressed data that is stored on our servers.
Our prices are based on a per GB/month cost. The
table on the left shows the pricing per GB in
each band, and the table below explains how this
works incrementally and give an idea of monthly
cost. Databarracks has no standing charges or
bandwidth charges, allowing you to easily budget
your backup requirements and giving you excellent
value for money.
Monthly GB pricing is based on compressed data.
We usually expect between 50 to 60 compression.
This means 100GB of raw data should compress and
be charged at between 50GB and 60GB
Usually the Arxcis software sits on an existing
server or workstation on you network. If you have
either a large data backup requirement (usually
over 500GB) or you have no available hardware to
run the backup system. Databarracks can supply
and configure a dedicated backup server to run
the software for you.

Risk free no-obligation trialIf you are still in
doubt as to what solution is right for your
business, we are so sure that our solution will
be a perfect fit for your company that we are
offering a six week risk and obligation free
trial. We will send engineers to your site,
configure and setup the solution and run backups
in a full live environment with all of your data
giving you time to see the service in operation,
get to know and trust the Databarracks
technicians and do some test restores of data in
anger. If after that time you do not wish to
continue using the service, you can with no
charges whatsoever. What have you got to loose?
Worryingly, only a third of businesses store
their data off-site (rising to half of large
companies). Companies that have suffered computer
thefts have also often lost their backups because
they were stored next to the computers that we
stolen. DTI ISBS 2004
If you would like to know more about Arxcis or
any elements of the service, please do not
hesitate to call 0870 922 0902 where an engineer

questions. If you would like to try Arxcis free
for six weeks or to arrange for someone to visit
you, please call 0870 922 0902 we will be more
than happy to help.
93 of companies that lost their data centre for
10 days or more due to a disaster filed for
bankruptcy within one year of the disaster. 50
of businesses that found themselves without data
management for the same time period filed for
bankruptcy immediately. National Archives
