  • Dear Families,
  • Youre invited to take part in Quincy Public
    Schools 2ndt Annual Winter Institute. Winter
    Institute is an intense academic enrichment
    program for students of varying interests and
    ability levels.
  • This six-week program will run on Saturday
    mornings from 900 a.m. - Noon, beginning
    February 28, 2004 and ending April 3rd (snow
    date April 10th.) A variety of mini-courses
    will be offered to Quincy students currently in
    grades K- 7. Our hope is that your child will be
    interested in one of them!
  • We are pleased to announce Writers Workshop,
    Lego Robotics, Advanced Lego Robotics and Amazing
    Art and Keep on Playing, just to name a few. Our
    offerings cover various academic and enrichment
    courses in the hopes of meeting the interests of
    all our motivated students.
  • Our goal at Winter Institute is to offer quality
    academic opportunities beyond the regular school
    day. The Saturday Immersion Program has something
    for everyone!

When does registration begin and
end?Registration begins January 30, 2004 and
ends on Friday, February 27th How do I
register?First, look through the brochure and
find the program or programs that you wish to
register your child for. Fill out the
registration form at the end of this brochure and
mail to Winter Institute, 107 Woodward Avenue,
Quincy, MA 02169, or bring your completed form to
the Office of Continuing Education between 830
am and 230 pm on any school day. Be sure to
list the program name on your registration
form. What are the dates and times of the
courses?Winter Institute runs from February 28th
until April 3rd. Classes meet on Saturdays from
9am Noon.

  • What is the tuition for Winter Institute?
  • The cost of Winter Institute is 142.00
    (includes materials and lab fees)
  • How can I pay for the program courses?
  • If you are mailing your application, we accept
    Master Card, Visa, checks, and money orders. If
    you are paying in person at our office, you may
    also pay with cash. We can not accept cash for
    mailed registrations.
  • I have more than one child registering. Can I
    use the same form to register both of them?
  • No, each child needs their own registration
    form. We have included a form on the back of
    this brochure. If you need additional forms,
    either photocopy the form or call the Office of
    Extension and Continuing Education at
    617-984-8888.
  • Do I have to pay when I register?
  • Yes. Any registrations received without payment
    or credit card information will not be processed.

  • How will I know if my child is accepted?
  • We do not send out confirmations. We will not
    contact you unless a program is filled or
    cancelled, or if we have questions about your
    registration. Your cancelled check or credit
    card charge is your receipt for registration
    purposes.
  • Are family discounts available?
  • Yes. Families paying full price for two
    programs will receive 50 off each additional
    program.
  • What grade level should I register my child for?
  • Grade level is the one your child is currently
    enrolled.
  • Is transportation available?
  • Transportation will not be provided for this
    program.

  • Where can I get additional copies of this
    brochure?
  • Brochures are available at your childs school,
    the Thomas Crane Public Library, City Hall, or
    the Office of Extension and Continuing Education,
    or by calling 617 -984- 8888.
  • Can I get a refund if my child cannot attend
    classes?
  • Yes. As long as we receive written notification
    in our office on or before February 27th so that
    we may offer your spot to anyone who might be on
    our waiting list. Refunds take 4-6 weeks to
    process.
  • What is expected of students while they attend
    Winter Institute ?
  • Students are expected to abide by all the rules
    and guidelines outlined in the Quincy Public
    Schools Students Rights and Responsibilities
    Handbook.

Course Offerings
  • Reading Language Arts
  • Readers Workshop
  • Grades 1 2
  • Students will share their favorite stories and
    work on sight words using reading games.
  • The students will then write and design their own
    books, which will be presented at the end of the
    institute on April 3rd.
  • Book Club
  • Grades 3 - 4
  • This course is designed with the avid reader in
    mind. Students will be given an opportunity to
    explore characters and plot twists through
    literature circles, book shares, and short skits.
  • Writers Workshop
  • Grades 4 - 6
  • Awaken the writer in you! Join us as we explore
    various literary genres -
  • poetry, creative writing, short stories. Choose
    one to work on and create a finished
  • product to be published in our Winter Institute
    Anthology! Whether you have a knack for rhyme or
    the gift of storytelling, this is the course for
    you!

  • Grades 4 - 6
  • Awaken the writer in you! Join us as we explore
    various literary genres -
  • poetry, creative writing, short story. Choose
    one to work on and create a finished product to
    be published in our Winter Institute Anthology!
    Whether you have a knack for rhyme or the gift of
    storytelling, this is the course for you!
  • Science
  • Sensational Science
  • Grades 1 3
  • Explore the human body, water, colors and more
    using your sense of touch, taste, smell, sight
    and sound
  • Goo-yuk, Gases and Light
  • Grades 4 - 6
  • Join us on an exciting journey in the physical
    sciences. Explore solids and liquids using
    goo-yuk and other materials. Experiment with
    gases and sound. This course is guaranteed to be
    full of surprises.

TechnologyLego Robotics Grades 4
7This is a hands-on program which will
incorporate basic computer programming as well as
learning and applying design construction
technologies. Students working in groups will
build and program a working robot using both
RoboLab and Lego Mindstorm software. This class
will conclude with a competition where students
will use their finished robots to compete for
points on a set playing field.
  • Internet Exploring
  • Grades 4 - 6
  • Students will explore a variety of software
    on PCs. They will create projects in class and
    will develop Internet Research skills. They will
    explore software such as Microsoft PowerPoint,
    Excel and Word. Families will be invited to join
    us on April 3rd for our PowerPoint presentations.

  • Amazing Art
  • Grades 3-6
  • Instead of being cooped up during these freezing
    winter Saturdays, join us for an exciting six
    weeks of Amazing Art. Amazing art will consist
    of painting, sculpture design, printmaking,
    beading, origami sculptures and much, much more.
  • Keep on Playing!
  • Grades 4 7
  • Keep on Playing is a six week instrumental
    music program for grades 4 7. Lessons and band
    rehearsal for grades 4 5 will run from 900am
    to 1030am. Lessons and band rehearsal for
    grades 6 7 will run from 1030am to 1200pm.
    It will be a morning of fun and well play some
    great music. The program will end on April 3rd
    with a concert at the Beechwood Knoll School.

  • On Stage, Please!
  • Grades 3 7
  • If you love the stage or have always wanted to
    try getting involved in a play, this is your
    program! Learn about musical theatre, dance, and
    art design. Then participate in a final On
    Stage, Please production!

  • Grades 3 4
  • Students will enjoy learning strategies for
    problem solving and obtain accuracy in
    computation.
  • Social Studies
  • Historical Battles
  • Grades 4 6
  • Students will explore and learn all about the
    events leading up to and during the Civil War.
    This exciting course will conclude with a small
    skit on April 3rd the final day of the course.
