Rigging the Boat
Boats are stored on lightweight dollies at the
lake with rudder inside. Most of you have had a
chance to go sailing, so this may be review

Rigging

• 1.Take off the cover
• 2. Make Sure all Plugs and Bailers are closed!!!
• 3. Take care to not let halyards slip up through
  the mast!
• 4. Attach raise Jib on land
• Tack of Jib attached with pin ring
• Head of sail attached to jib halyard shackle
• Jib Sheets run INSIDE the shrouds OUTSIDE of
  trapeze lines to the eyes on the deck (figure 8
  on end)
• Jib Halyard Tension System
• 5. Attach but DO NOT RAISE Main Sail
• Find black slug on the clew feed the sail
  through the track on the boom
• Attach the tack, then the outhaul
• Attach the Halyard to the Head using a stopper
  knot (figure eight)
• Feed ONLY the heat into the mast track.
• 6. Launch the boat into the water stowing dolly
  out of the way.
• 7. From the leeward side of a dock, lower the
  centerboard, attach rudder tiller, then raise
  the mainsail.
• 8. Clear dock lines, push bow off in desired
  direction, and step in.

• Generally balances the boat better
• Crew - Wherever needed
• How do you steer?
• When going forward - push the tiller away from
  the direction you want to turn.
• When going backward - push the tiller the
  direction you want to go.

• Reminder Why are jibes more dangerous than
  tacks?
• If wind is strong, tack to change directions,
  dont jibe!
• Beware of dangerous Accidental Jibes
• Signs you are about to accidentally jibe
• 1. Mainsheet goes slack.
• 2. Boom starts lifting up.
• 3. Are able to go wing and wing (jib luffs).
• 4. Leech of main begins forming an S shape.
• Solutions Head higher up into the wind, AND warn
  crew.

Tell Tale Review
If the sails are luffing or the inner telltale
falls Sheet In or Bear off to expose it to more
wind. If the outer telltale falls It is in
too tight- ease the sheet out or head up!

Getting out of the No-go-zone

• Release jib, and push boom tiller in the
  direction you want to go.
• Patiently wait for the boat to back out of the
  no-go-zone.
• Release boom straighten tiller.
• Trim mainsail back in and begin sailing!

General Safety

• Dont approach shallow areas or reefs.
• Avoid traveling through a race course!
• Centerboard should be all the way down when
  sailing upwind to prevent the boat from sliding
  across the water. When sailing for increased
  boat speed, centerboard may be partially raised
  when off-the-wind to reduce drag.
• To Reduce Heel
• 1. Hike out!
• 2. Sheet out on the main, a little at a time.
• 3. Sheet out on the jib (only in extreme
  circumstances).
• 4. Last resort Dump the sails or go into
  irons.

• No-Go Zone Approach (Recommended)
• Approach from the leeward side on a close reach.
  Luff sails and go head-to-wind.

• Better to slow down too early than too late!
• If you hit the dock, glance off, dont T-bone
  it!

Derigging

• De-rig the boat on the leeward side of the dock
• Derig mainsail and rudder before raising
  centerboard
• Make sure that no part of the boat touches the
  ground on shore or in shallow water!
• Pull boat on dolly and up to the storage
  location.
• Open drainage plugs, attach cover prop boat up.
• Ensure sails are dry, roll them store in the
  boat
• Keep everything neat! We are guests of LLSC
