  • -This will get you started on the next step in
    the research paper, The Outline.
  • -The outline shows your main ideas and the order
    in which you are going to write them. Its the
    map of what will later become your rough draft.
  • List items in their order of importance.
  • Ex. (birth to death)
  • 2. Develop from cause and effect
  • Ex. (consequences of a criminal's actions or
    what caused someone to become famous and the
    effect that had on society)
  • Process
  • Ex. (how someone rose to fame)

  • Separate ideas by main idea or categories
  • You must use at least 3 main ideas or categories!
    Thesebecome the main headings of the outline.
  • Label with Roman Numerals
  • Start with Roman Numeral III, and so on.
  • List the subcategories(use quotations,
    paraphrase, or commentary)
  • Capital Letters show subcategories
  • Arabic Numbers details(use quotations,
    paraphrase, or commentary)
  • WARNING! Never use a single subheading A
    without B or 1 without 2.
  • Ex. If you cut an apple, can you be left with
    one piece?
