  • The Place

Bereshiyt 28 11 (Artscroll) He encountered the
place and spent the night there because the sun
had set he took from the stones of the place
which he arranged around his head, and lay down
in that place Rashis Comment Scripture does
not mention which place, but it means the
place mentioned elsewhere, which is Mount
Moriah, concerning which it is said (Gen.
224)And he saw the place from afar.

  • The Stone of Destiny

According to tradition, shortly before 700 BCE,
colonists from the tribe of Dan (Tuatha de
Danaan) arrived in Ireland by ship. In about
569 BCE, an elderly prophet named Jeremiah came
to Ireland after the fall of Jerusalem. Jeremiah
brought an ark, a harp and a stone called
Lia(th)-fail in Gaelic (the stone of
destiny). The stone was brought to Scotland,
and known as the Stone of Scone, Scotlands
kings were crowned upon it. Captured by Edward I
(Longshanks) in 1296, subsequent English monarchs
were crowned upon it in Westminster Abbey. The
stone was returned to Scotland in 1996, and is
currently located in Edinburgh Castle.

  • Stealing the Stone

In Glasgow, a small group of Nationalist students
decided to strike a blow for Scottish pride. On
December 25th, 1950 four of them - Ian Hamilton,
Kay Matheson, Alan Stuart and Gavin Vernon -
decided to repatriate the stone. Hamilton
recalls I seized one of the iron rings, and
pulled strongly. It came easily - too easily for
its weight, and I felt something uncanny had
happened. 'Stop!' I said and shone my torch.
11
  • Stealing the Stone

I shall not forget what the faint light revealed,
for I had pulled a section of the Stone away from
the main part, and it lay in terrifying
separation from its parent. I was going to be
sick. Everything was now turned to a new purpose
which was not good. Better to howl and bring the
watchman and have it repaired than carry away a
broken Stone. 'We've broken Scotland's luck,'
came Alan's awful whisper.
12
  • Stealing the Stone

I shone the torch on the break. Suddenly I saw
that the greater area of the break was much
darker than the thin wafer round the top edge.
The Stone had been cracked for years, and they
had not told us. 'No, we haven't!' I said. 'They
did it. They've cheated us, and kept it from
us.' 'Quit talking and get moving!' said Gavin. I
picked the small part up like a football, and
opened the door into the sacrarium. The light
still burned at the far end of the nave, but of
the watchman there was no sign. The Stone of
Scone was broken into two parts.

  • The Ladder

Bereshiyt 28 12 (Artscroll) And he dreamt, and
behold! A ladder ( sulam) was set
earthward and its top reached heavenward and
behold! angels of God were ascending and
descending on it Comment In Jewish mystical
writings (such as the Zohar) Jacobs ladder is
the equivalent of a tree (etz)as in the
sefirotic tree, describing the emanations or
attributes of YHWHand a tzelon Elohim, a
supernatural image of Elohim (Messiah Vol 3, p.
149 by Avi Ben Mordechai)
14
  • The Ladder

Jacob ben Asher, a medieval commentator known as
Baal Ha Turim (Master of the Rows, referring to
the breastplate of the high priests garment)
comments that the numerical values of the words
a ladder set up or standing (sulam mutztzav)
is equivalent to the ramp leading up to the altar
of the Temple and the concept of the ladder set
up on the earth or earthward is an allusion to
the altar which in Shemot/Exodus 2021 is
described as an altar of earth and the
expression its top or head reaching heavenward is
an allusion to the fragrance of the offerings
which ascended heavenward as a sweet savor to
HASHEM.
15
  • The Ladder

Artscroll Commentary Mount Sinai. The ladder
alludes to Sinai, since the words sulam and Sinai
both have the numerical value of 130 the angels
represent Moses and Aaron and God stood atop the
ladder just as He stood atop Sinai to give the
Torah (Midrash). Accordingly, the Torah, given at
Sinai and taught by sages such as Moses and
Aaron, is the bridge from heaven to earth.
16
  • The Ladder

Yochanon/John 149-51 (Peshitta) 49 Nathaniel
answered and said to him, Rabbi, you are the Son
of Eloha. You are the King of Israel." 50 Yeshua
said to him, "Because I told you that I saw you
under the fig tree, do you believe? For you will
see greater things than these." 51 He said to
him, "Truly, truly I say to you, from now on you
will see heaven opening and the angels of Eloha
ascending and descending to the Son of Man."
17
  • The Ladder

Yochanon/John 151 (Peshitta) 51 He said to him,
"Truly, truly I say to you, from now on you will
see heaven opening and the angels of Eloha
ascending and descending to the Son of
Man. Comment Yeshua says that He is the
Ladder, and through Him is the Way to the Altar
in the Heavenly Realms.
18
  • The Stone(s)

In verse 11, stones is plural. In verse 18, it
is singular.
Bereshiyt 28 18 (Artscroll) Jacob arose early
in the morning and took the stone that he placed
around his head and set it up as a pillar and he
poured oil on its top But now pillows
(merashishot) is plural Genesis 2818 (KJV)
And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took
the stone that he had put for his pillows, and
set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the
top of it.
Can you think of anything that uses both singular
and plural words to describe the same thing?
19
  • Singular and Plural at the Same Time

Exodus 3613 18 (NASB) 13 He made fifty clasps
of gold and joined the curtains to one another
with the clasps, so the tabernacle was a unit
(echad). 18 He made fifty clasps of bronze to
join the tent together so that it would be a unit
(echad). Elohim A plural noun that takes a
singular verb when it refers to YHWH. Sefirot

  • The Stones

Artscroll Commentary Pirkei dRabbi Eliezer
adds that Jacob took these twelve stone from the
altar upon which his father Isaac had been
bound. When these stoneswhich indicated to him
the twelve tribes would descend from
himcoalesced into one stone, he perceived that
all the tribes were destined to become one people
i.e., indivisible and unique on the earth, as
it is said 1 Chron. 1721 And who is like your
people Israela nation that is one on the earth
22
  • The Stones

Some connections between Stone(s) and
Messiah If the stones represent Israel,
Matthew 215s reference to Hosea 111 has a
stones connection. The apostolic Scriptures
tell us that Psalm 11822 and Isaiah 2816 are
about Yeshua, and 1 Corinthians 104 (Peshitta)
and all drank of the same drink of the Spirit,
for they were drinking from the rock of the
Spirit that came with them and that rock was
Messiah.
23
  • The Stones

Commentary If from 1 person (Jacob) come 12
tribes (stones) and the 12 stones become 1
people, once broken into 2, and then back to 1
people (stone), this is similar to Ezekiels
prophecy Ezekiel 3719 say to them, 'Thus
says Adonai YHWH, "Behold, I will take the stick
of Joseph, which is in the hand of Ephraim, and
the tribes of Israel, his companions and I will
put them with it, with the stick of Judah, and
make them one stick, and they will be one in My
hand."'
24
  • The Ladder and the Stone(s)

Commentary Bottom Line in my view, the Ladder
and the Stone(s) both teach us about the Messiah.

25
  • The Dream

Bereshiyt 2813 -14 (ISR) And see, ????  stood
above it and said, I am ????  Elohim of Ab_raham
your father and the Elohim of Yitsh?aq. The land
on which you are lying, I give it to you and your
seed. 14 And your seed shall be as the dust of
the earth, and you shall break forth to the west
and to the east, to the north and the south. And
all the clans of the earth shall be blessed in
you and in your seed.

28
  • The Speckled Sheep and Goats

Genesis 3032 (NASB) let me pass through your
entire flock today, removing from there every
speckled and spotted sheep and every black one
among the lambs and the spotted and speckled
among the goats and such shall be my
wages. Genesis 3037-39 (NASB) 37 Then Jacob
took fresh rods of poplar and almond and plane
trees, and peeled white stripes in them, exposing
the white which was in the rods. 38 He set the
rods which he had peeled in front of the flocks
in the gutters 39 So the flocks mated by the
rods, and the flocks brought forth striped,
speckled, and spotted.
29
The Speckled Sheep and Goats
  • Artscroll Commentary Citing Psalms 1827, with
the trustworthy, act trustingly and with the
crooked, act perversely, the Talmud (Megillah
13b) teaches that while it is never permitted to
steal or lie, one must protect himself against
    thieves and connivers. Consequently, Jacob
resorted to several devices to outwit his uncle
and retain what was rightfully his under the
original terms of the arrangement. He placed
colored rods in front of the flocks at the time
they conceived, so that they would bear lambs
having the same markings as the rods they were
facing. R' Bachya and others comment that Jacob
did not adopt this course until instructed to do
so by an angel (see 3110-12).

30
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 31

Gen 3119 And when Lab_an had gone to shear his
sheep, Rah?el stole the house idols that were her
fathers. Gen 3130 And now you have gone
because you greatly long for your fathers house,
but why did you steal my mighty ones? Gen 3132
With whomever you find your mighty ones, do not
let him live. In the presence of our brothers,
see for yourself what is with me and take it with
you. For Yaaqob_ did not know that Rah?el had
stolen them.
31
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 31

Gen 3133 And Lab_an went into Yaaqob_s tent,
and into Leahs tent, and into the tents of the
two female servants, but he did not find them.
And he came out of Leahs tent and entered
Rah?els tent. 34 Now Rah?el had taken the house
idols and put them in the camels saddle, and sat
on them. And Lab_an searched all about the tent
but did not find them. 35 And she said to her
father, Let it not displease my master that I am
unable to rise before you, for the way of women
is with me. And he searched but did not find the
house idols.
32
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 31

Gen 3133 And Lab_an went into Yaaqob_s tent,
and into Leahs tent, and into the tents of the
two female servants, but he did not find them.
And he came out of Leahs tent and entered
Rah?els tent. 34 Now Rah?el had taken the house
idols and put them in the camels saddle, and sat
on them. And Lab_an searched all about the tent
but did not find them. 35 And she said to her
father, Let it not displease my master that I am
unable to rise before you, for the way of women
is with me. And he searched but did not find the
house idols.
33
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 31

Artscroll Commentary By saying Now Jacob did
not know that Rachel had stolen them, the Torah
testifies that Jacob uttered the imprecation
because he suspected that an idolatrous servant
had stolen the teraphim to worship them in
secret. Had he had even the slightest notion that
Rachel had stolen them, he would (a) not have
denied it so boldly and (b) never have uttered a
curse. He would have known that she had no desire
to worship idols, but that her motive was to wean
her father from idolatry (Akeidas Yitzchak
Sforno Alshich).
34
  • Bereshiyt/Genesis 31

Artscroll Commentary Because of her utter
contempt for Laban's "gods," Rachel placed them
beneath her (Zohar). In the plain sense of the
verse, however, she simply wanted to hide them.
And she knew that if she explained to Laban that
the way of women was upon her (v. 35), he would
not trouble her to rise.
35
Camps
  • Genesis 323 (NASB) Genesis 322 2 Jacob said
when he saw them, "This is God's camp." So he
    named that place Mahanaim.
  • Genesis 323 (Targum Jonathan) And Jakob said
when he saw them, These are not the host of Esau
who are coming to meet me, nor the host of Laban,
who have returned from pursuing me but they are
the host of the holy angels who are sent from
before the Lord. Therefore the name of that place
he called, in the language of the sanctuary,
    Machanaim.
