Reading
  • A Parents Guide to Helping Enhance Reading
    Skills at Home!

2
  • Many parents are interested in helping their
children build and enhance reading skills at
    home.

3
  • This has definitely been a consensus for the
    parents here at Arrowhead!
  • Parents, you have been asked to
  • read with your children
  • have your children read for 20-30 minutes
  • and have your children summarize what they have
    read

4
  • All these are wonderful things to be done at
    home.
  • But parents, I guess youve realized that

5
  • Reading just isnt what it used to be!

6
  • Heres a peek into what reading is now!

7
  • According to the State of Maryland,
  • Reading Instruction not only focuses on learning
to decode words and answer questions that follow
    the reading.
  • Reading Instruction is helping a child to
    understand

8
  • Authors Viewpoint
  • Cause and Effect
  • Fact and Opinion
  • Fantasy and Realism
  • Making Inferences
  • Sequence of Events
  • Text Features
  • BCRs

9
  • Here are some ideas to use at home to help with
    these comprehension areas of reading.

10
  • Authors Viewpoint involves explaining the
  • authors opinion about an idea or subject.

11
  • Parents, when serving dinner to your children ask
  • How do you feel about me preparing dinner for
you? Then ask, How do you think I feel about
preparing dinner for you? Why do you think
    thats how I feel?
  • Hence, authors viewpoint! The parent is the
author. The child explains the parents opinion
    about the subject (preparing dinner).
  • Always ask why. Explaining why allows your
child to support their comments with details.
    (BCR skill).

12
  • Cause and Effect involves explaining
  • relationships between characters and events.

13
  • Parents, when encouraging your child (character)
to do homework and study for test (event). Ask
    them
  • Why do you think it is important to study for
this test? What do you think will happen if you
    do not study?
  • Hence, cause and effect! The cause why
study? The effect The outcome of studying or
    not studying.

14
  • Fact and Opinion involves determining a fact
(whats true) and determining an opinion (what
    someone thinks).

15
  • Parents, when driving down the highway and your
    child says,
  • Those are really weird looking license plates.
  • Let them know that weird is their opinion.
Its what they think or feel about the plate and
that everyone doesnt feel that way.
  • Ask them to give you some facts about the
license plate, ie color, letters, numbers.
Explain that these facts are things that can be
    visibly proven.

16
  • Fantasy and Realism is explaining the
    believability of the characters actions.

17
  • When watching tv with your child, parents this
is an opportunity to identify what is real and
    what is fantasy.
  • Shows like Thats So Raven is full of fantasy
(Raven seeing into the future) and realism (an
annoying sibling and parents who have high
expectations of her make her follow the rules).

18
  • Making inferences involves explaining what you
think may happen when the authors has given you
much information. (Reading between the lines).
  • The student has to use their background
knowledge of the subject to determine what may
    happen.

19
  • Parents, on the rare occasion that your child
doesnt do the things that you have asked them to
do. (Pick up toys and shoes out of the floor and
you have stepped on them with bare feet.)
  • You can use this time to practice inferring.
  • When your child sees your face and hears your
voice. They will immediately be able to infer
what will happen next based on their background
knowledge of these types of events, without you
    saying a word!
  • Be sure to ask your child to make an inference
about what you are thinking and what they think
    will happen next.

20
  • Sequence of Events is being able to identify
events and to put them in order.

21
  • Parents,
  • A sure way to help your child with sequence of
events is to get them in the kitchen with you.
Let them help you prepare a dish using a recipe.
(Could be something as simple as making Jello
gelatin or Jello pudding.) Have them review the
recipe before the two of you begin to prepare it.
Begin asking your child questions about the
recipe. What ingredients do we need? What do we
do first? What comes next? Be sure to use
sequence words like before, then, after, next,
first, and last. Then prepare the recipe
    together, exactly as stated.
  • You would have just practiced sequence of events!

22
  • Text Features are any changes in the text that
  • help you to understand the text better.
  • Text features are everywhere and in several
forms. Bold print, italics, colored print, maps,
    charts, pictures, captions, headings and
subheading, titles, and the list could go on.

23
ReadingA parents guide to helping enhance
reading skills at home!
  • Parents, text features are all over your home.
They are not only in books and magazines. Text
features can be found on food items, shoe boxes,
etc. Ask you child about the text features on
the items in your home. Ask them for example how
the picture of the smiling face and the white
words help them to know what is inside of the
bag. Ask them what other things are there that
help them to understand what is inside the bag.
Ask them if one text feature helped them more
than another. Be sure to ask why! The why helps
    with the supporting details.

24

BCR for you. Try it in your spare time.

  • In closing, Parents dont be discouraged about
helping your child to read. There are activities
at home right under your nose. The key is
generating conversations with your child and
using the language mentioned in this
    presentation.
  • Good Luck and Happy Reading!
