1
This is Happy feet here to tell you about a
foreign service officer and what it takes to
become one.
2
The job in a nut shell is to spread the U.S.
policies in foreign countrys. Hence the name
foreign service officer.
First off I will tell you the basics of what a
foreign service officer does.
They also make economic ties with whatever
country there stationed in.
3
Im sure you are curious about how to become a
foreign service officer. Well
Fine ill tell you. The first step is to take an
oral assessment. Those who pass the test then get
a background test.
Some things they look for in the background test
are failure to repay a U.S. Government-guaranteed
loan obligations, failure to register for the
selective service,
Past problems, violations of the law, drug or
alcohol abuse, bad education, and criminal
record. All of these things can prevent some one
from becoming a foreign service officer. To find
out this information they interview people he had
current contact with, supervisors, and co workers.
4
They also must be available worldwide. This
meaning that they have to be willing, and
medically able, to go to any country their
country needs them in.
The candidate must also have a good medical
history because many embassy's that they stay in
are in remote areas were immediate medical
assistance is greatly limited. They also need to
get a couple of medical forms passed.
5
Now lets see some of the benefits of being a
foreign service officer . One is that they get to
be part of the life insurance plan F.E.G.L.I..
The F.E.G.L.I. offers low insurance rates that
are paid through par deduction. The u.s
government pays for one third of these costs.
Though this plan is voluntary it is intended to
serve as an immediate protection from financial
hardship or loss in the case of death. They also
get long term life insurance that carries on into
retirement.
Another benefit they get is annual leave. This
the officers vacation lasts from 30 days per
leave if they are stationed in America but 45
days per leave if stationed over seas. Also
spouses and children under 21 may go over seas
with the officer. They can bring their own
personal vehicle with them to as long as it
follows the the country their stationed in rules.

Finally they must get all these previous test
results reviewed one last time to check over
their observations one last time.
There are ten paid for holidays New years, Martin
Luther king day, presidents day, memorial day,
independence day, labor day, Columbus day,
veterans day, thanksgivings day, and Christmas
6
Here is a chart that will show you how much a
foreign service officer makes in a year.
