Title: Give Me Space!

1
Give Me Space!
  • Virtual Field Trip Experience
  • For Sixth Grade Students

2
Introduction
  • Welcome to our Space field trip. As you journey
through space, you will be completing an
assignment for science and for technology.
  • There will be journal entries, data gathering,
and postcard writing from your visits to the
    planets.
  • Fasten your seatbelts and put on your helmets!
    Get ready for Blast Off!

3
Components of the Universe
  • Welcome to SPACE! We will first look at what
types of items we can find in space. In the
following pages well find out the difference
between stars, planets, comets, asteroids, and
    meteors.
  • Click on the underlined words above to explore.
Then draw and label an example of each in your
    science journal.

4
Stars
  • Stars provide light and energy for a solar
system. Without the stars, there would be no life
    on earth.
  • CLICK here . In your journal, define star and
find out what will happen to our sun in about 5
    billion years.

5
Planets
  • A planet is a large body that orbits a star and
doesnt give off light of its own.
  • Go here and enter in your journal the 3 types of
planets and give examples of each type.

6
Comets, Meteors, and Asteroids
  • Comets, meteors and asteroids are similar bodies
    in space.
  • While comets are large balls of ice and rock,
asteroids and meteors are just rock. When a comet
gets close to the sun, it heats up and so we see
    a tail behind it.
  • A meteor is an asteroid after it enters our
    atmosphere.

7
Get ready to travel to our planets!
  • For each planet, you will enter the following in
your journal (you will need to write this down)
  • 1. Size of planet
  • 2. Physical Chemical make up of planet (gas,
    rock, ice, etc.)
  • 3. Average temperature of planet
  • 4. Average rotation of planet around the sun
  • 5. Amount of gravity on planet
  • 6. How many moons planet has
  • 7. Is it an inner planet or outer planet?

8
Postcard
  • After you have entered all your planetary data,
choose one from which you will write a postcard.
Copy a picture from the Internet and paste it in
a word document. Make sure you credit the web
site. Then type at least 4 sentences telling
about your visit there. Use the data from that
    planet to help you write.

9
Mercury
  • Find out about Mercury! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

10
Venus
  • Find out about Venus! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

11
Earth
  • Find out about Earth! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

12
Mars
  • Find out about Mars! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

13
Jupiter
  • Find out about Jupiter! Enter
  • the required information in your journal.

14
Saturn
  • Find out about Saturn! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

15
Uranus
  • Find out about Uranus! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

16
Neptune
  • Find out about Neptune! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

17
Pluto(okay, so its a dwarf planet)
  • Find out about Pluto! Enter the required
    information in your journal.

18
Time to Play a Game!
  • Visit this website to collect planet trading
cards! Keep playing until you have all of the
    possible cards!

19
Journal Assignments make sure you have all
these
  • 1. Draw and label stars, planets, comets,
    asteroids, meteors.
  • 2. Define star
  • 3. List 3 types of planets and give examples of
    each kind.
  • 4. Data from each planet.
  • 5. Dont forget your postcard! (not in your
    journal, though)
