Cyclical rise and fall of the Earths ocean
caused by the gravitational pull of the Sun and
Moon. Flood Tide rising Ebb Tide

The moons gravity pulls on the Earth
The water on the Earths surface is pulled
towards the moon. This is called a tidal bulge.

Centrifugal force also pulls on the Earth
This creates a tidal bulge on the other side of
the Earth.

The sun is having the same effect. It creates
tidal bulges on both sides of the Earth.

FULL MOON
During a Full Moon, the suns gravitational pull
and the moons gravitational pull reinforce each
other. This is called a Spring Tide. The high
and low tides are extreme. (It has nothing to do
with the season Spring.)

NEW MOON
The SAME FORCES are acting on the Earth during a
New Moon. The Sun and Moon are reinforcing each
other. This is still a spring tide. The tidal
changes are extreme.

QUARTER MOONS
The gravitational force of the sun creates tidal
bulges on two sides of the Earth. The
gravitational pull of the moon creates tidal
bulges on the other two sides of the Earth. These
forces cancel each other out. There is very
little change between high and low tide. This is
called a Neap Tide.
