Turtle Docents Needed!
MMWD is looking for turtle docents to observe
turtle and river otter activity at Phoenix Lake
and Lake Lagunitas. The Western Pond Turtle
(Clemmys marmorata) is the only native turtle in
California, and is listed as a Federal and State
Species of Special Concern. On MMWD land, pond
turtles have been found in Alpine, Lagunitas and
Phoenix Lakes. In 2004 and 2005 MMWD actively
removed the invasive Red-eared slider turtle
(Trachemys scripta elegans) from Alpine and
Phoenix Lakes, due to concerns that the invasive
turtle was out-competing native pond turtles.
Now, wed like to see how our native turtles are
faring. Docents will monitor Phoenix and
Lagunitas to record turtle presence and behavior,
in order to help us determine if the turtle
populations are stable.

good homes.
