Title: Elements and Compounds

1
Elements and Compounds
  • 10/21/09

2
Element
  • A substance that contains only one type of atom
  • Example- Hydrogen, Oxygen, carbon, gold, copper,
    silver

3
Atoms make up ELEMENTS
  • The protons in an Atom determines the kind of
    element it is
  • Different elements contain different numbers of
    protons, neutrons and electrons.

4
How do you classify an Element?
  • Elements can be classified by its
    characteristics.
  • Metals (conducts electricity, and conducts heat)
  • Nonmetals (doesnt conduct electricity)
  • Metalloids /Semi-metals (can sometimes be a
metal or a nonmetal (in between))

5
How are elements organized?
  • We use the Periodic Table
  • Periodic Table (it is a system to classify
    elements in an organized way)

6
How to read the periodic table?
  • Hydrogen

Atomic Number (number of Protons)
Symbol
Name of element
Atomic Mass (how many protons and neutrons are in
the nucleus)

8
How many protons, neutrons and electrons are in
an atom?
  • Atomic Number of Protons
  • An atom wants to be stable so it also has the
    same of Electrons
  • Atomic Mass of Protons of Neutrons

9
What is a Compound?
  • Compound- substance made of two or more elements
    together
  • Example Salt, water, carbon dioxide

Hydrogen Atoms
Sodium atoms
Chlorine Atoms
Oxygen Atoms

11
Lets Label the Periodic Table
  • Look at the periodic table
  • Make a Key to help us understand how to read an
    element
  • Color the Nonmetals
  • Color the Metals
  • Color the Metalloids
